Buton Palace Fort: A Grand Monument to the Buton Sultanate's Glory
Buton Palace Fort, located in Bau-Bau City, Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi, is not just an ordinary military defense structure. This site holds the record as the largest fort in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records with an area of 23,375 hectares. Standing strong on a hill 100 meters above sea level, this fort is a symbol of sovereignty, local architectural intelligence, and the center of Islamic civilization in eastern Nusantara.

Historical Origins and Period of Establishment
The construction of Buton Palace Fort was carried out in stages, beginning during the reign of the 3rd Sultan of Buton, La Sangaji (Sultan Kaimuddin), who ruled between 1591-1596. However, the structure we see today is the result of massive improvements made during the reign of the 6th Sultan of Buton, La Buke (1632-1645).
Unlike forts in Indonesia which were generally built by Dutch or Portuguese colonialists, Buton Palace Fort was purely built by the local community. Its construction was triggered by the urgent need to protect the sultanate's center of government from pirate threats, as well as the expansionist ambitions of foreign powers and neighboring kingdoms amidst the heated spice trade competition in the 17th century.

Architectural Characteristics and Construction Details
One of the most prominent unique facts about this fort is its adhesive material. The people of Buton at that time did not use modern cement, but rather a mixture of lime, sand, and egg whites as an adhesive for the mountain stones (coral stones) that were neatly arranged. Despite using organic materials as an adhesive, this structure has proven capable of withstanding hundreds of years against extreme weather and earthquakes.
Structurally, the fort has a wall perimeter of 2,740 meters with an average height of 1-8 meters and a thickness of up to 2 meters. The fort is designed with a layered defense system consisting of:
1. Lawa (Gateways): There are 12 gateways, each guarded by soldiers and having its own name and philosophy. The number 12 symbolizes the number of openings in the human body.
2. Baluara (Bastions): There are 16 observation posts or bastions that function as places to mount cannons.
3. Moat: On some sides, there is a moat system as an additional obstacle for enemies.

Historical Significance and Important Events
Buton Palace Fort served as the "Center of the Universe" for the Buton Sultanate. Within the fort's walls, social, political, and religious life was strictly regulated. One of the most remembered historical events is the steadfastness of the Buton Sultanate in maintaining its sovereignty. Unlike many kingdoms in Nusantara that fell to the VOC, Buton managed to maintain its autonomy through clever diplomacy and strong physical defense.
This fort also bears silent witness to the unique democratic system operated by the Buton Sultanate. While other kingdoms used an absolute monarchy system based on lineage, the Sultan of Buton was democratically elected by the traditional institution (Siolimpu) based on very strict criteria. The inauguration ceremony of the sultan was held on Batu Popaua, a sacred stone located within the fort complex.

Important Figures and Golden Age
The name Sultan Himayatuddin Muhammad Saidi (Oputa Yi Koo) is closely associated with the history of resistance in this fort. He was the only Sultan of Buton who openly took up arms against the VOC and chose to wage guerrilla warfare in the forests to defend the sultanate's dignity.
The 17th to 18th centuries are considered the golden age, during which the fort served as a center for Islamic literacy. Ancient Buton manuscripts written in the Wolio script flourished within the palace environment, covering teachings of Sufism, state law, and historical records.

Cultural Heritage and Religious Meaning
In the center of the fort complex stands the Buton Palace Grand Mosque (Masjid Al-Muqarrabin), built in 1712. This mosque has a unique feature in the form of a flagpole (Kasulana Tombi) 21 meters high, made of teak wood, which has stood since the 17th century. This wood was reportedly brought by Buton sailors from Singapore (formerly known as Tumasik).
Philosophically, the layout of this fort reflects the concept of "Man and Nature." The circular structure of the fort on the hill is likened to the human body protecting its vital organs within, namely the people and the values of Islam. To this day, the tradition of "Santiago" or an oath of loyalty to the leader and homeland is still often voiced in this area.

Preservation and Current Status
Currently, Buton Palace Fort is a major historical tourist attraction in Southeast Sulawesi. The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, regularly undertakes conservation efforts to repair parts of the walls that have begun to erode or collapse due to age and vegetation.
The fort is still inhabited by the local community. The area inside the fort is a living village where traditional wooden houses still stand alongside sacred sites. This makes Buton Palace Fort the largest "Living Museum," where visitors not only see piles of stones but also interact with the direct descendants of the sultanate's officials who still preserve their ancestral customs.
The existence of Buton Palace Fort is tangible proof that the Indonesian nation has advanced defense technology and social system roots long before the modern era. As a world heritage site, its preservation is not only the responsibility of the people of Bau-Bau but also a collective pride of the Indonesian nation in the constellation of global history.
