Kalimantan's Green Towers: Geographical and Mountain Profile

The main attraction of TNBBBR is the presence of two mountain peaks that give it its name: Bukit Baka (1,617 masl) in West Kalimantan and Bukit Raya (2,278 masl) in Central Kalimantan. Bukit Raya holds the title of the highest peak in Kalimantan within Indonesian sovereign territory (one of the Seven Summits of Indonesia).

Topographically, the area is dominated by steep hills and mountains with extreme inclines. The forest here is a type of evergreen mountainous tropical rainforest, where mist often shrouds the canopy of large trees, creating a mystical and cool atmosphere that contrasts with the heat of Kalimantan's lowlands.

Unique Ecosystems and Biodiversity

TNBBBR is a natural laboratory that holds extraordinary flora and fauna wealth. Here, visitors can find various types of Dipterocarpaceae, the giant trees characteristic of Kalimantan. Additionally, this area is home to the rare giant parasitic flower, Rafflesia sp.. Many endemic species of forest orchids are also found hanging from the branches of trees covered in thick moss.

In terms of fauna, TNBBBR is an important habitat for primates such as the Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), Mueller's Gibbon (Hylobates muelleri), and the Red Langur. The Hornbill, a symbol of purity for the Dayak people, is often seen flying across the valleys within this area. The presence of large mammals like Sun Bears and Clouded Leopards also indicates that the ecosystem in Murung Raya is still very well preserved.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experiences

For tourists who love a challenge, TNBBBR offers an unforgettable experience:

1. Climbing Bukit Raya Peak: This is the most prestigious activity. The climb via the Central Kalimantan route (Murung Raya) is known for its high difficulty due to its long terrain and dense vegetation. It takes about 7 to 10 days for a round trip.

2. Birdwatching: With its high diversity of bird species, wildlife photographers often make this place their hunting ground for endemic Bornean birds.

3. Cultural Tourism and Local Wisdom: Before entering the forest area, tourists usually interact with the Dayak people (such as the Dayak Ot Danum). Traditional ceremonies are often performed as a form of respect to ancestors and a request for permission before entering the sacred forest area.

4. River Exploration: The Murung Raya region is flowed by many clear rivers originating from mountain springs. Visitors can enjoy a journey by traditional boat (klotok) while observing wildlife along the riverbanks.

Best Time to Visit

Considering its location in a tropical rainforest with high rainfall, the best time to visit TNBBBR is during the dry season, which is between June and September. During this period, the climbing trails tend to be drier, and the risk of flash floods in small rivers is lower. However, visitors must remain vigilant as mountain weather can change at any time. Avoid visiting between December and March due to very high rainfall intensity, which can make the trails very slippery and dangerous.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park is designated as a conservation area to protect the headwaters of major rivers in Kalimantan (Melawi River in West Kalimantan and Katingan River in Central Kalimantan) and to safeguard biodiversity from the threats of illegal logging and poaching.

The national park management enforces strict rules for visitors, including a permit system (Simaksi) and the obligation to bring back all trash. Orangutan reintroduction efforts are also carried out in several special zones, making this area an important pillar in the conservation of these great primates.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching TNBBBR from the Murung Raya side requires thorough physical and logistical preparation. The journey usually starts from Palangka Raya (the capital of Central Kalimantan) to Puruk Cahu, the capital of Murung Raya Regency. This land journey takes about 10-12 hours. From Puruk Cahu, the journey continues by 4x4 vehicle or via the river route to the last village before entering the national park area, such as Tumbang Tosah Village.

Facilities within the area are very minimal to preserve the natural authenticity. There are no star hotels in the forest; tourists will stay at climbing posts or set up tents (camping). In the buffer villages, there are simple homestays owned by local residents that offer an authentic experience of Dayak community life.

Conclusion: A Destination for the Adventurous Soul

Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park is not just an ordinary tourist destination. It is a place where humans can reconnect deeply with the pure, untouched natural world. For those brave enough to penetrate the dense forests of Murung Raya, the reward awaiting them is the view of the sunrise over an ocean of clouds from the summit of Bukit Raya, and a tranquility that can only be found in the heart of Borneo. A visit here is not just about conquering a peak, but about respecting an unparalleled natural heritage of the world.
