Exploring the Heart of Borneo: The Charm of Kayan Mentarang National Park
Taman Nasional Kayan Mentarang (TNKM) is not just an ordinary conservation area; it is the last representation of intact highland tropical rainforest on the island of Kalimantan. Located in Nunukan Regency and Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan Province, this national park spans approximately 1.27 million hectares. As a trans-border protected area directly bordering Sarawak and Sabah, Malaysia, TNKM plays a vital role as the "Lungs of the World" and the last bastion of biodiversity in the Heart of Borneo.

Majestic Landscapes and Ecosystems
The geographical characteristics of Kayan Mentarang National Park are dominated by steep hills and high mountains that form sedimentary rock formations and volcanic highlands. Here, visitors can witness the grandeur of the Iwan Mountains and the Müller-Schwaner Mountains that frame the horizon. Altitudes vary from 200 meters to over 2,500 meters above sea level, creating an extraordinary ecosystem gradation.
The forests in TNKM are divided into several types, ranging from lowland dipterocarp forests, lower montane forests, to magical moss forests on the highest peaks. The uniqueness of its landscape is also marked by the presence of large rivers such as the Kayan River, Mentarang River, and Sembakung River that cut through the dense forest, creating challenging rapids and hidden waterfalls that have been largely untouched by humans.

Biodiversity Richness: Home to Rare Species
As one of the highest biodiversity centers in the world, TNKM is a habitat for various endemic and endangered flora and fauna. Within the dense forest, large mammals such as Banteng (Bos javanicus), Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi), and Sun Bears reside. The area is also a sanctuary for primates like the White-fronted Langur and Bornean Gibbon.
For birdwatchers, Kayan Mentarang is a paradise. More than 300 bird species have been recorded inhabiting this area, including the Hornbill, which is a sacred symbol for the Dayak people. The flora in this region is equally stunning; ranging from various rare wild orchids, pitcher plants (Nepenthes), to giant trees from the Dipterocarpaceae family that soar 50-60 meters high.

Outdoor Activities and Cultural Experiences
Visiting Kayan Mentarang National Park offers an adventure that is both adrenaline-pumping and soul-enriching. Some of the main activities that can be undertaken include:
1. Jungle Trekking and Mountain Expeditions: Exploring the trails under the primary forest canopy provides a pure adventure sensation. Visitors can hike towards the Long Layu highlands or the Krayan region to see the forest panorama from above.
2. River Rafting: Using traditional longboats, tourists can navigate challenging river rapids. The clear river flow against a backdrop of green forest walls provides an unforgettable visual experience.
3. Dayak Cultural Tourism: One of TNKM's unique values is the presence of indigenous Dayak communities (such as the Dayak Lundayeh, Kenyah, and Kayan tribes) who live in harmony with nature within the area. Visitors can visit traditional villages, see archaeological sites in the form of ancient stone graves (dolmens), and learn about local wisdom in forest management.
4. Wildlife Observation: Conducting bird watching or searching for mammal tracks around salt licks (sapan) – places where animals gather to consume minerals from the soil.

Best Time to Visit
The weather conditions in North Kalimantan are heavily influenced by the wet tropical climate. The best time to visit Kayan Mentarang National Park is during the dry season, between June and September. During this period, rainfall is relatively lower, making hiking trails less slippery and river water levels more stable for boat navigation. However, visitors are advised to always monitor local weather forecasts, as rain can occur at any time in the rainforest.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
TNKM was designated as a National Park in 1996 and is the first national park in Indonesia managed with a "Collaborative Management" system. This means that local indigenous communities are actively involved in decision-making and area protection. Its status as part of the Heart of Borneo initiative makes protection against illegal logging and wildlife hunting a top priority for the Indonesian government in cooperation with international organizations like WWF. Tourists are expected to adhere to the Leave No Trace principle to preserve this sensitive ecosystem.

Accessibility and Facilities
Reaching Kayan Mentarang National Park requires a true adventurous spirit. The main entrance is usually via air travel from Tarakan City or Malinau Regency using a pioneer aircraft (such as MAF or Susi Air) to small airports in the interior like Long Bawan in Krayan or Long Ampung.
Facilities within the area are still very limited and community-based ecotourism. Visitors can stay in local homestays in villages around the area, which offer an opportunity to experience the warmth of the local residents. It is highly recommended to use the services of experienced local guides, as the vast and dense forest terrain can be confusing for newcomers.
Kayan Mentarang National Park is more than just a tourist destination; it is a living monument to the natural wealth of the archipelago. A journey here is a pilgrimage to the heart of the earth, where humans and nature still speak the same language: harmony. For adventurers seeking tranquility amidst natural purity, Nunukan and Kayan Mentarang await exploration.
