About

Historical Origins and Period of Establishment

The history of Istana Karang cannot be separated from the lineage of the Karang Kingdom, which dates back to the 16th century. However, the building we see today is a structure built in the early 20th century, specifically around 1936. The construction of this palace took place during the reign of the 12th King of Karang, Tengku Muhammad Arifin.

The construction of this palace marked an era of power transition in Tamiang, where Dutch colonial influence began to seep into the traditional royal bureaucracy. Before this permanent building was erected, the center of the Karang Kingdom's government moved according to the security and political dynamics of the region. The establishment of the palace at its current location was chosen due to its strategic position, close to the river transportation routes that were then the main economic arteries in the East Aceh region.

Architecture: A Blend of Malay and Colonial Aesthetics

One of the main unique features of Istana Karang lies in its eclectic architectural style. The building reflects a harmonious blend of traditional Malay architecture, Islamic influences, and the Indische Empire style popular during the Dutch colonial era. The main structure adopts the concept of a stilt house modified with permanent materials such as bricks and cement, which at that time were symbols of luxury and modernity.

Visually, the palace is dominated by ivory yellow and green colors, which are typical colors of Malay grandeur. The roof is a limasan (hip roof) shape with wood carving ornaments on the eaves, showcasing the skill of local craftsmen of that era. One specific construction detail is the presence of large, sturdy pillars at the front, giving an impression of grandeur and authority. Large windows with wooden grilles are designed to ensure good air circulation, adapting to Aceh's humid tropical climate.

The interior of the palace is divided into several main rooms: a reception room (balairung) for official visits, a family room, and the sultan's private chambers. The floors use antique patterned tiles that are still original in some parts, giving a strong nostalgic feel to every visitor who enters.

Historical Significance and Important Events

Istana Karang has been a silent witness to various important geopolitical events in the Tamiang region. During the Dutch colonial period, the palace served as an administrative center where the Sultan interacted with colonial officials (Controleur). Although under Dutch supervision, Istana Karang remained a symbol of moral sovereignty for the Tamiang people.

The most crucial event that shaped the history of this palace was the period of the "Social Revolution" in East Sumatra and Aceh in 1946. At that time, many palaces and royal families in North Sumatra and Aceh became targets of mass anger fueled by anti-feudalism sentiments. Fortunately, Istana Karang did not suffer total destruction like the Langkat Palace or palaces in the Deli region. This was due to the Karang Royal family's cooperative approach with local independence struggle figures, thus preserving the physical building, although its function as a royal administrative center ended.

Key Figure: Tengku Muhammad Arifin

The name Tengku Muhammad Arifin cannot be separated from the narrative of Istana Karang. He is known as a visionary leader who had to face great pressure between two interests: preserving royal customs and adapting to the demands of Indonesian independence. Under his leadership, Istana Karang became a cultural center where Tamiang traditional arts, such as Tari Ulek Mayang and oral literature, were preserved and performed at official royal events.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Currently, Istana Karang has been designated as a Cultural Heritage Site by the government through the Cultural Preservation Center. Preservation efforts have been carried out several times through renovation programs aimed at repairing structures that have begun to decay with age. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain, especially in terms of routine maintenance and the provision of supporting facilities for historical tourism.

Some parts of the palace are now functioning as mini-museums displaying old photographs of the royal family, the genealogy of the Karang sultans, and some remnants of royal household items. The Aceh Tamiang Regency government continues to strive to promote Istana Karang as a leading historical tourism destination to attract the interest of the younger generation in learning about their cultural roots.

Cultural and Religious Meaning

For the people of Aceh Tamiang, Istana Karang is an identity. The Tamiang ethnic group, which has a cultural closeness with the Malay ethnic group but is administratively located in Aceh Province, makes this palace a symbol of unity. Strong Islamic values are also reflected in the etiquette that once prevailed in this palace, where every aspect of royal life was always aligned with Islamic Sharia.

The existence of this palace also reminds us of the unique "Suku Lima" (Five Tribes) system of governance in Tamiang, where power was divided democratically among tribal chiefs. Istana Karang is a monument that proves that before national integration, this region already had an advanced legal system and social order.

Unique Facts and Conclusion

One rarely known unique fact is that around the palace area, there is rumored to be an underground tunnel used as an escape route to the river, although its physical existence is currently difficult to prove due to sedimentation and changes in soil structure. Furthermore, Istana Karang is the only royal palace้—่ฟน in Aceh Tamiang whose building still stands intact and can be visited by the public, unlike its neighboring royal palaces such as Istana Benua Tamiang, which only leaves ruins or foundations.

As a historical site, Istana Karang is a living narrative that tells of the glory, diplomacy, and resilience of a small nation on the coast of Aceh. Preserving its sustainability is not only the government's duty but also the moral responsibility of the entire community to ensure that the footsteps of our ancestors are not lost to the dust of modernity. By visiting and learning its history, we pay homage to those who have built civilization in Bumi Muda Sedia.
