Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia's richest countries in historical sites, the product of thousands of years of civilisational encounters: Hindu-Buddhist, Islamic, European colonial, and modern independence. Indonesia's cultural heritage also includes living palaces: the keratons of Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Cirebon, and Ternate remain centres of tradition still maintained by sultan families. National museums in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar house inscriptions, palm-leaf manuscripts, ceramics, and prehistoric artefacts from Sangiran to Liang Bua in Flores — the cave where the "Hobbit" Homo floresiensis was discovered.
