About
Geographical Characteristics and Landscape
Geographically, Derawan Island is surrounded by fine white sand with sea water gradients ranging from clear transparent, turquoise blue, to deep blue in the trench areas. The island has a relatively flat topography, but its true richness lies in its gentle coastline and the surrounding coral reefs.
A unique phenomenon on Derawan Island is the presence of sandbanks or sandbars that only appear during low tide. Additionally, a long wooden pier jutting out into the sea is an iconic spot where visitors can see green turtles swimming freely without even needing to dive into the water. The clarity of the water here allows for exceptional visibility, creating an illusion as if the moored boats are floating on water.
Amazing Biodiversity and Ecosystems
Derawan Island is part of the World's Coral Triangle, making it home to the highest marine biodiversity on the planet. One of the main attractions that defines Derawan is the presence of Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). This island is one of the largest turtle nesting sites in Indonesia.
Beneath the water's surface, Derawan's coral reef ecosystem consists of hundreds of species of hard and soft corals. The vast seagrass meadows around the island provide abundant food sources for turtle and dugong populations. If lucky, tourists can also encounter pygmy seahorses, pipefish, and various types of nudibranchs, which are sought after by underwater macro photographers.
Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experiences
The main activities on Derawan Island naturally revolve around marine exploration. Snorkeling and diving are must-do agendas. Dive sites around the pier, extending towards the "Blue Light Cave," offer spectacular coral wall views.
1. Swimming with Turtles: Visitors can easily find turtles feeding in the seagrass meadows or simply passing by under the floating accommodations.
2. Island Hopping: Derawan serves as a starting point to nearby islands. Visitors can go to Kakaban Island to swim with stingless jellyfish in an ancient lake, or to Sangalaki Island to see turtle conservation efforts and swim with Manta Rays.
3. Turtle Educational Tour: At night, under the supervision of conservation officers, tourists can witness the process of turtles laying eggs on the beach, a touching and educational natural experience.
4. Enjoying the Sunset: Walking around the island, which takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, is the best way to enjoy the evening atmosphere on the wooden pier facing west.
Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Derawan Island is during the dry season, which is between May and October. During this period, the sea tends to be calm, and underwater visibility reaches its peak, sometimes exceeding 20 meters.
November to March usually brings the west wind season, which can trigger high waves and rain, potentially disrupting boat crossing schedules. However, for turtle watchers, these animals are present year-round, although the peak nesting season often occurs in the middle of the year.
Conservation Status and Environmental Protection
Derawan Island is located within a conservation area managed to preserve its ecosystem. Environmental awareness here is very high; there are strict prohibitions against touching coral reefs, chasing turtles, or taking any marine objects as souvenirs.
The turtle conservation program in Derawan involves the local community and the government to ensure that nesting habitats are not disturbed by human activities or predators. Tourists are strongly encouraged to practice sustainable tourism by not littering into the sea and minimizing the use of single-use plastics while on the island.
Accessibility and Facilities
Reaching Derawan Island requires a little extra effort that will be fully rewarded upon arrival. The main route is by air to Kalimarau Airport in Tanjung Redeb, Berau. From the airport, the journey continues by land vehicle for approximately 2 hours to the port in Tanjung Batu. From Tanjung Batu, tourists must cross using a speedboat for about 20-30 minutes.
Facilities on Derawan Island are very adequate with a concept that blends with nature. Various accommodation options are available, ranging from local homestays to luxurious water villas built over the sea. Supporting facilities such as a diving equipment rental center, beachfront cafes, a sub-health center, and internet access are available, yet the tranquil fishing village atmosphere is well-preserved.
Derawan Island is a perfect representation of the natural wealth of Eastern Indonesia. It offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city into the embrace of pure nature, where humans and marine life coexist in beautiful harmony. A visit to Derawan is not just a holiday, but a journey to appreciate the incredible biodiversity heritage of the archipelago that we must protect together.
