About

Unique Natural Landscape and Geology

Visually, Kawaliwu Beach presents a dramatic panorama. Unlike beaches in the southern part of Indonesia dominated by fine white sand, Kawaliwu has the characteristics of a northern beach with fine gravel and grayish-black volcanic rocks. The backdrop of this beach is made even more majestic by the silhouette of Mount Lewotobi standing tall, serving as a visual reminder of the geothermal energy flowing beneath the beach's surface.

The main uniqueness of Kawaliwu lies in its "under-sand hot springs." Along the shoreline, especially when the sea recedes, visitors can feel warm to hot temperatures seeping out from the cracks in the rocks. This phenomenon occurs due to geothermal activity from the surrounding active volcanoes. These hot springs do not have a pungent sulfur smell; instead, they feel fresh and are believed by the local community to have healing properties for various skin ailments and muscle relaxation.

Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity

The ecosystem around Kawaliwu Beach is still well-preserved. On the land side, vegetation is dominated by tall coconut trees and bidara trees that provide natural shade. The rocky beach structure serves as a habitat for various types of mollusks and small crabs often seen among the rocks during low tide.

The waters in front of Kawaliwu Beach are part of the Hading Bay waters, known for its relatively calm currents. This allows for good underwater ecosystem growth in some spots further from the hot spring sources. Due to the high water temperature at the shoreline, not many coral reefs grow right at the edge of the beach, but this condition actually creates a unique ecological zone where only specific organisms can adapt to the fluctuations in seawater temperature mixed with geothermal water.

Outdoor Experiences and Activities

The most iconic activity at Kawaliwu Beach is "Sand Steam Bathing" and creating private bathing pools. Visitors typically bring small shovels or use their hands to dig holes in the beach sand. Within minutes, the holes will fill with hot water seeping from below. Visitors can regulate the water temperature by allowing seawater to enter the dug pool little by little. The sensation of soaking in a natural hot spring pool while gazing out at the Flores Sea is an unforgettable experience.

Besides soaking, Kawaliwu Beach is a perfect location for nature photography. The blend of deep blue sea colors, black rocks, and thin steam that sometimes rises from the sand surface in cold air creates a beautiful mystical atmosphere. For those who seek tranquility, this beach offers a strong meditative ambiance, far from city noise, with only the gentle sound of waves and the chirping of birds from the forest at the foot of Mount Lewotobi.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Kawaliwu Beach is in the afternoon, around 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA (Central Indonesian Time). During this time, the sea water usually starts to recede, making the under-sand hot spring areas more accessible. Additionally, the beach's northwest-facing position offers a very stunning sunset view. The sky changing to orange and purple hues reflects on the calm sea surface, creating a beautiful contrast with the beach's black rocks.

Seasonally, the best time to visit is during the dry season (May to October). During this period, the access road to the location tends to be safe, and the clear weather ensures visitors can enjoy the panorama of Mount Lewotobi without being obscured by dark clouds.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As a destination that heavily relies on natural phenomena, the preservation of Kawaliwu Beach is a priority for the people of Lewotobi Village. This area is managed self-sufficiently, emphasizing cleanliness. Visitors are strictly prohibited from littering, especially plastic, on the beach as it can clog the sand pores where the hot water emerges.

Environmental awareness here also includes the protection of coastal vegetation. The trees around the beach are allowed to grow naturally as erosion barriers. The absence of massive concrete construction along the coastline helps maintain the natural cycle of geothermal water, ensuring it remains stable and undisturbed by underground building structures.

Accessibility and Facilities

Kawaliwu Beach is located approximately 17 to 20 kilometers from Larantuka, the capital of East Flores Regency. The journey can be completed in about 30 to 45 minutes by motorized vehicle. The route to the location offers charming coastal and hilly views, with reasonably good asphalted roads.

Facilities at Kawaliwu Beach are still relatively simple but functional, reflecting a community-based tourism concept. There are several lopo (traditional NTT huts) for resting, simple toilet facilities, and a parking area. Around the location, visitors can find small stalls selling young coconuts and snacks. For tourists wishing to stay overnight, there are several homestay options in the surrounding villages or one can return to Larantuka town center, which has more complete hotel facilities.

Kawaliwu Beach is a hidden gem offering natural luxury in the form of open-air hot spring therapy. Its geological uniqueness, combined with local hospitality and a majestic volcanic landscape, makes this place a must-visit destination for anyone seeking another side of East Flores' beauty. Preserving Kawaliwu's natural state means safeguarding an unparalleled natural heritage of the archipelago.
