About
Historical Context and Development Philosophy
The name "Istiqlal" originates from Arabic, meaning "Independence." The idea for its construction was conceived by KH Wahid Hasyim and Anwar Tjokroaminoto in 1950, shortly after Indonesia's sovereignty was recognized. President Soekarno then took over the project as a landmark (nation-building) endeavor to demonstrate that the newly independent nation could build a magnificent structure with its own strength.
The choice of location on the former Dutch fort, Fort Prins Frederik, held strong symbolic value: transforming a symbol of colonialism into a symbol of divinity and freedom. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 24, 1961, but due to political and economic turmoil, construction was only completed and inaugurated by President Soeharto on February 22, 1978.
Architect Friedrich Silaban and the Vision of Modernism
One of the most unique aspects of Istiqlal Mosque is its designer, Friedrich Silaban, a Protestant Christian architect from North Sumatra. Silaban won the architectural competition with a design themed "Divinity." Silaban's victory reflected the spirit of inclusivity and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) championed by Soekarno.
The architectural style of Istiqlal is international modernism adapted to the tropical climate. Unlike traditional Javanese mosques, which typically have layered wooden roofs (atap tumpang), Silaban opted for reinforced concrete and steel. He avoided overly complex ornamentation, favoring clean geometric lines, tall pillars, and spacious open areas for natural air circulation.
Structural and Architectural Innovations
Structurally, Istiqlal consists of a main building and an annex connected by a wide walkway. Its architectural elements are rich with numerical symbolism:
1. Main Dome: With a diameter of 45 meters, symbolizing Indonesia's independence year, 1945. This dome is a stainless steel frame structure, highly modern for its time. The interior of the dome is adorned with Ayat Kursi (Verse of the Throne) in elegant calligraphy.
2. Single Minaret: Unlike many mosques with multiple minarets, Istiqlal has only one, standing 66.66 meters tall (symbolizing the number of verses in the Quran according to certain calculations). The 30-meter spire at the top symbolizes the 30 juz (parts) of the Quran.
3. Main Pillars: Inside the main prayer hall, there are 12 giant pillars supporting the dome. The number 12 symbolizes the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW on the 12th of Rabiul Awal.
4. Seven Main Gates: The mosque has seven entrances named after the Asmaul Husna (Beautiful Names of Allah), which also symbolize the seven heavens in Islamic cosmology.
Material Aesthetics and Tropical Adaptation
The primary material used is white marble from Tulungagung, which covers almost all the walls and floors, giving a cool and majestic impression. The use of stainless steel for the dome, pillars, and railings adds an industrial-modern touch that distinguishes it from other historical mosques worldwide.
Silaban's ingenuity is evident in its natural ventilation system. The mosque does not use air conditioning in its main hall but remains cool. This is achieved through a design with walls that are not solid but feature lattice work (roster), allowing wind to flow freely into the space while creating a dramatic play of light and shadow on the marble floor.
Cultural Significance: Harmony in the Heart of the City
One of the most iconic characteristics of Istiqlal Mosque is its location directly opposite the Jakarta Cathedral. This placement is not coincidental but a deliberate intention by President Soekarno to showcase the religious tolerance that forms the foundation of Indonesia.
These two buildings often share parking space during each other's major religious holidays. In the modern era, this relationship has been strengthened by the construction of the "Silaturahmi Tunnel," an underground passage connecting Istiqlal's ground floor with the Cathedral area, becoming the world's first physical symbol structurally linking two different places of worship.
Major Renovation and a New Face
In 2019-2020, Istiqlal Mosque underwent its first major renovation since its inauguration. The focus of this renovation was on lighting, landscaping, and facility upgrades without altering Silaban's original structure.
The implementation of smart lighting technology allows the dome to change colors according to specific moments, and the use of solar panels makes Istiqlal one of the first places of worship in the world to receive a Green Building (EDGE) certification from the World Bank Group. The river area around the mosque has also been redesigned into an aesthetic public space, enhancing the visual experience for visitors.
Visitor Experience and Social Functions
For visitors, entering Istiqlal is a calming spiritual experience. The massive scale of the space instills a sense of smallness in the face of the Creator. Besides being a place for the five daily prayers and Eid prayers, capable of accommodating up to 200,000 worshippers, Istiqlal functions as an educational center (madrasah), a library, and offices for Islamic organizations.
International tourists are often seen on the upper corridors, admiring the grandeur of the concrete architecture blended with the surrounding greenery. Istiqlal has transformed from merely a building into a global landmark representing a moderate, modern Islam that is in harmony with Indonesian national values.
With all its material splendor and philosophical depth, Istiqlal Mosque continues to stand as a reminder of the nation's struggle. It is a meeting point between history, Friedrich Silaban's visionary architecture, and an inclusive spirit of religiosity, making it a timeless architectural gem amidst the hustle and bustle of Central Jakarta.
