About
Origins and Period of Establishment
Etymologically, Klenteng Hok Lay Kiong means "Palace that Brings Fortune" (Hok: fortune, Lay: come, Kiong: palace). Although definitive administrative records regarding the groundbreaking date are difficult to find due to limited documentation during the colonial era, historians and local community figures believe that this klenteng has stood since the mid-18th century. Some sources mention the period from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.
The establishment of this klenteng is inseparable from the large-scale migration of ethnic Chinese to the outskirts of Batavia (now Jakarta) following the "Geger Pacinan" (Chinese Uprising) event in 1740. Chinese people who survived the massacre in Batavia fled eastward, including to the Bekasi area, which at that time was still dominated by swamps and agricultural land. On the banks of the Bekasi River, which was once the main water transportation route, they built settlements and this place of worship as a form of gratitude and a plea for protection.
Architecture and Construction Details
The architecture of Hok Lay Kiong reflects a strong Southern Chinese traditional style, particularly the influence of the Hokkien style. The building structure is dominated by red, symbolizing happiness and good fortune, and golden yellow, symbolizing majesty.
One of the prominent features is the curved roof (Nghia-A-Kha) adorned with a pair of dragons fighting over a jewel (fire pearl). Dragons in Chinese cosmology are considered protectors from evil spirits and symbols of natural power. The main entrance to the klenteng is guarded by two lion statues (Cioksai) carved from solid stone, symbolically serving as guardians of the sanctity of the place of worship.
Inside, the building structure is supported by ancient, still-sturdy teak wood pillars. The ceiling of the klenteng is decorated with intricate wood carvings (Lau-Chuan), depicting Chinese mythological stories. In the main hall, there is an altar for the Earth God (Tuan Di Pong) and various other deities. Uniquely, despite undergoing several renovations, the layout of the main hall has been maintained according to its original Feng Shui principles, facing the river as the source of life.
Historical Significance and Important Events
Klenteng Hok Lay Kiong is not only a witness to religious development but also to the struggle for independence. During the physical revolution (1945-1949), the Bekasi region was the front line of the Republic of Indonesia's defense against Dutch military aggression. This klenteng is said to have once served as a refuge for civilians of various ethnicities during armed conflicts around the Bekasi iron bridge.
The existence of this klenteng is also closely related to Bekasi's economic history as a center for agricultural produce trading. Due to its strategic location near the Bekasi River, this klenteng became a gathering point for Chinese merchants who brought commodities from the interior to the port in Batavia. This made Hok Lay Kiong a social gravity center for the "Cina Benteng" and "Cina Kebun" communities residing in Bekasi.
Figures and Intergenerational Connections
Throughout its history, the management of the klenteng has been passed down through generations by families and foundations. Figures from the Pancaran Tridharma Foundation have played a crucial role in maintaining the existence of this building. During the New Order era, when Chinese cultural expression was strictly limited, Klenteng Hok Lay Kiong managed to stand tall as an inclusive center for social activities, proving its identity's resilience amidst political pressure.
One unique fact is the klenteng's connection with other historical sites in Bekasi. There is a historical link between the community in this klenteng and local fighters under the leadership of K.H. Noer Ali. The Chinese community around the klenteng is known to have had a harmonious relationship with the indigenous residents, creating strong cross-ethnic solidarity in facing the colonizers.
Preservation and Restoration Efforts
As one of the oldest buildings in Bekasi City, Hok Lay Kiong has been designated as a cultural heritage object by the local government. The last major restoration effort was carried out to repair the roof and repaint it without altering its original form. Decayed supporting timbers were replaced with similar materials to maintain authenticity.
The Bekasi City government, along with the foundation, continues to strive to make this area a historical and religious tourism destination. The arrangement of the area around the klenteng, including road access and environmental cleanliness, is a priority so that the building's aesthetic and historical value is preserved amidst the encroachment of modern buildings and shopping centers.
Current Cultural and Religious Role
Every year, Klenteng Hok Lay Kiong becomes the center for Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations in Bekasi. The "Gotong Toapekong" tradition (parading deity statues) is the most anticipated event, where thousands of residents from various ethnic and religious backgrounds gather to witness Barongsai and Liong performances.
The important value of this klenteng lies in its function as a social adhesive. Here, values of tolerance are practiced in real life. The existence of the klenteng in a predominantly Muslim community is a tangible proof of the motto "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" (Unity in Diversity). For Bekasi City, Hok Lay Kiong is not just a pile of old bricks and wood; it is an identity, a collective memory, and a symbol of harmony that continues to shine in the heart of the city.
With an age reaching hundreds of years, Klenteng Hok Lay Kiong continues to stand as a reminder that Bekasi has diverse historical roots. Through continuous maintenance, this site is expected to continue to educate future generations about the importance of appreciating the nation's cultural and historical heritage.
