About

Colonial Origins and the Founding of the Kubu Sultanate

The history of Amantubillah Palace is rooted in the arrival of nobles from Hadramaut, Yemen, who were direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW (the Alaydrus lineage). The central figure in the founding of this settlement was Syarif Idrus bin Syarif Abdurrahman Alaydrus in 1772 AD. Syarif Idrus was the son-in-law of Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie, the founder of the Pontianak Sultanate.

Initially, the Kubu region was a village at a river mouth strategically important for trade. Along with the growing political and economic influence of Syarif Idrus, this community transformed into an independent sultanate. Amantubillah Palace was then built as the center of government and the official residence of the sultan. The name "Amantubillah" itself has a deep meaning in Arabic, meaning "I believe in Allah," reflecting the very strong religious foundation in the governance of this kingdom.

Distinctive Malay Coastal Architecture

Amantubillah Palace features a distinctive Malay Kalimantan architectural style adapted to the wetland and riverine environment. The building is dominated by the use of ulin wood (ironwood), known for its exceptional strength and durability, even against tidal waters.

The structure is a stilt house with high supporting pillars to avoid floods and attacks from wild animals in the past. The roof is a steep pyramid shape, designed to quickly drain rainwater. One prominent characteristic is the use of yellow and green colors dominating the walls and palace ornaments. In Malay tradition, yellow symbolizes the greatness and glory of the king, while green symbolizes prosperity and the breath of Islam.

The interior of the palace is divided into several main sections: Balairung (main reception hall for official meetings), Penyandaran (family room), and the sultan's private chambers. Carvings of floral and geometric motifs adorn the ventilation and door frames, showcasing the artistic skill of the local community at that time.

Historical Significance and Key Events

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the Kubu Sultanate under the protection of Amantubillah Palace was a key player in the trade of agricultural products such as rattan, rubber, and copra. Its location on a strategic waterway made it a meeting point for local traders, Bugis, and Europeans.

One of the most crucial historical events was the complex relationship between the Kubu Sultanate and the Dutch East Indies colonial government. Although it had signed a political contract (Korte Verklaring) with the Dutch, the sultanate still strived to maintain its cultural autonomy. Amantubillah Palace became the coordination center for traditional elders in maintaining the social order of the community amidst external pressures.

Another uniqueness of Amantubillah Palace is its relatively stable succession and governance system compared to several other small kingdoms in West Kalimantan. This allowed for the preservation of oral traditions and religious manuscripts that are still historical references for researchers today.

Important Figures and Lineage of Leadership

The most revered figure is, of course, Syarif Idrus Alaydrus as the founder. However, the leadership of Sultan Syarif Abbas Alaydrus and Sultan Syarif Muhammad Alaydrus also marked significant developments in territorial expansion and the strengthening of Islamic propagation. The sultans of Kubu were known as leaders who also served as religious scholars, so Amantubillah Palace not only functioned as a palace but also as a center for Islamic religious education for the community along the Kubu River.

Conservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Over time and due to the influence of extreme tropical weather, the original building of Amantubillah Palace suffered serious damage. However, recognizing its invaluable historical significance, the Kubu Raya Regency Government, along with the West Kalimantan Provincial Government and supported by the sultanate's heir family, has undertaken several stages of restoration.

The restoration was carried out with great care to maintain the authenticity of the materials. Ulin wood remains the primary material, and damaged carving patterns were reconstructed based on old photographs and the memories of elders. Currently, this palace has been designated as a Cultural Heritage Site, ensuring legal protection and regular maintenance by the state.

Cultural and Religious Functions Today

To this day, Amantubillah Palace remains a center for annual cultural activities. One of the most famous rituals is the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad SAW's birthday and the "Robo-Robo" tradition held around the palace's waters. This event attracts thousands of visitors and serves as a means to strengthen the bonds between the extended palace family and the general public.

Within the palace complex, visitors can still see several original relics such as ancient cannons, the sultan's throne, and other heirlooms. The presence of this palace instills a sense of pride in the people of Kubu Raya, serving as a reminder that their region was once a dignified center of civilization in Borneo.

Conclusion: A Legacy for the Future

Amantubillah Palace is not just a dead monument. It is a living entity that continues to inspire younger generations about the importance of preserving cultural roots amidst the currents of modernization. With its sturdy wooden structure and glorious history, this palace still stands tall on the riverbank, telling stories of faith, struggle, and the glory of a nation that once prospered in West Kalimantan. The utilization of this site as a historical tourism destination is expected to further increase public awareness of the importance of preserving ancestral heritage.
