Kelok 9 Bridge is not just an ordinary transportation infrastructure project; it is a masterpiece of civil engineering that blends modern functionality with the natural aesthetics of the Bukit Barisan Mountains. In response to these challenges, the Indonesian Government, through the Ministry of Public Works, designed a radical solution: building a series of flyover bridges that soar above the valley, rather than continuing to cut into landslide-prone cliffs. Construction began in 2003 and was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in October 2013.

The bridge is designed with much wider turning radii compared to the old road, enabling large vehicles to pass at a constant speed without dangerous maneuvers.
