About
Contrasting Topography and Landscape
The main uniqueness of Temajo Island lies in its contrasting land morphology. Unlike the surrounding small islands that tend to be flat, Temajo is dominated by towering hills, creating a majestic silhouette when viewed from afar. The western side of the island features a long coastline with fine white sand, while the eastern side is rocky with low cliffs facing directly into the Natuna Sea.
Lowland tropical forests cover almost all parts of the hills on this island. The dense vegetation provides natural shade, keeping the air temperature cool even though it is in a coastal area. In several spots, freshwater streams form small rivers that flow from the hills to the beach, creating a unique mini-estuary ecosystem.
Preserved Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Temajo Island is home to various flora and fauna typical of West Kalimantan. Within its forests, visitors can still find various types of tropical birds, long-tailed monkeys, and various small reptiles. Giant trees like Meranti and young Ulin wood are sometimes found in the inland hilly areas, giving an exotic ancient forest feel.
The most stunning biodiversity is actually found beneath its waters. The waters around Temajo Island are home to fringing reefs. Here, divers can find colonies of hard corals and soft corals that are home to clownfish (nemo), parrotfish, and even hawksbill turtles that occasionally appear to feed. The clarity of the water around the island allows for considerable visibility, making it an ideal location to observe the marine ecosystem without having to dive too deep.
Variety of Outdoor Activities
For adventure lovers, Temajo Island offers various activities that test adrenaline while soothing the soul:
1. Snorkeling and Diving: With relatively calm currents on the sandy beach side, beginners can safely go snorkeling. The healthy coral reef areas are only a few tens of meters from the shoreline.
2. Temajo Hill Trekking: There is a trail that cuts through the forest to the summit of the hill. From the highest point, visitors will be treated to a 360-degree panorama showcasing the expanse of the blue sea, surrounding small islands, and the Kalimantan coastline in the distance.
3. Island Hopping and Canoeing: Renting a fisherman's boat or using a canoe to circle the island is the best way to explore hidden coves and unique granite rock formations along the coast.
4. Camping Ground: Flat areas under coconut trees on the beach are often used as camping sites. Spending the night under a canopy of stars with the sound of gentle waves is an unforgettable experience in Temajo.
Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations
To get the best experience, the most ideal time to visit Temajo Island is between April and September. During this period, the east monsoon winds blow, which usually bring clear weather and very calm seas. Water clarity is at its peak, greatly supporting snorkeling activities.
Conversely, from October to February, the West Kalimantan region enters the north wind season. During this period, sea waves can become quite high and rainfall increases. Although the island still has its own charm, sea activities such as crossing and snorkeling may be limited due to safety factors and reduced underwater visibility.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As a natural tourist destination, the preservation of Temajo Island is a top priority. The awareness of local communities and tourism managers is increasing regarding coral reef protection. Visitors are strictly prohibited from engaging in destructive activities, such as stepping on corals while snorkeling or taking marine life home.
Conservation efforts also focus on waste management. Given its location separate from the mainland, a self-managed waste system is implemented by urging tourists to bring their plastic waste back to the Mempawah mainland. Protection of forest areas on the hills is also carried out to prevent erosion that could damage the clarity of the seawater around the island.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Reaching Temajo Island requires land and sea travel. From Pontianak City, tourists can head to the Ferry Port in Sungai Kunyit, Mempawah, with a travel time of about 1.5 to 2 hours. From the pier, the journey continues by renting a motorboat from local fishermen or a speedboat. The sea journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on weather conditions and the type of boat used.
Although its main concept is wilderness tourism, some basic facilities are available on the west side of the island. There are several accommodations in the form of wooden villas and semi-privately managed homestays. Facilities such as public toilets, gazebos for relaxing, and small stalls selling young coconuts and fresh seafood can be found in the main beach area. However, for visitors planning a day trip, it is advisable to bring personal equipment and sufficient supplies as electricity and mobile signal availability on the island are still limited, which further adds to the "disconnected from the outside world" impression sought by many tourists.
Temajo Island is not just an ordinary tourist destination; it is a representation of the pure natural beauty of the West Kalimantan coast. With a blend of jungle adventure and coastal tranquility, this island promises a transformative experience for anyone who appreciates the wonders of nature.
