Tracing the Footprints of Time at Merangin Jambi Geopark: A World Heritage Site from the Permian Era

Merangin Regency in Jambi Province holds one of the world's most precious geological treasures. Merangin Jambi Geopark, recently officially recognized as part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks, is more than just an ordinary natural tourist destination. This place is a "natural library" that stores the Earth's historical records from 290 million years ago, making it one of the oldest and most complete flora fossil sites in Asia.

Geological Wonders: Araucarioxylon Fossils and Jambi Flora

The main attraction that distinguishes Merangin Geopark from other earth parks is the presence of fossilized plants (petrified wood) along the Batang Merangin River and Mengkarang River. Here, visitors can directly see fossilized Araucarioxylon trees—the ancestors of pine trees—still standing strong in stone form on the riverbanks.

This geological uniqueness originates from ancient volcanic eruptions millions of years ago that buried surrounding plants and organisms with volcanic ash. The mineralization process over hundreds of millions of years transformed these woods into stone with clearly visible fiber details. In addition to wood fossils, there are also ancient shell fossils (brachiopods) that prove the mountainous region of Jambi was once the seabed uplifted by tectonic activity.

Natural Landscape and Batang Merangin Ecosystem

Topographically, Merangin Geopark is dominated by karst hills, dense tropical rainforests, and fast-flowing rivers with challenging rapids. This area is part of the Bukit Barisan ecosystem, which is home to high biodiversity.

Along the riverbanks, tropical rainforest vegetation is well-preserved. Giant Dipterocarpaceae tree species shade the area, creating habitats for various fauna such as hornbills, long-tailed macaques, and even traces of wild cats. The sounds of nature from forest insects and the roar of the river create a thick, ancient atmosphere, as if transporting tourists back to prehistoric times.

Outdoor Activities: White Water Rafting and Educational Tourism

Merangin Jambi Geopark offers a unique blend of extreme adventure and educational tourism. The best way to enjoy these fossil sites is by White Water Rafting along the Batang Merangin River.

1. Fossil Rafting: Tourists will embark on a river journey of approximately 9 to 12 kilometers. Along the rafting trip, guides will stop the boats at strategic points where ancient fossils are embedded in the river cliff walls. The rapids here have difficulty grades of III to IV, which are adrenaline-pumping but still safe for beginners with professional guidance.

2. Forest Trekking: For those who prefer land routes, trekking trails lead to several hidden waterfalls like Air Terjun Muara Karing. These trails pass through dense forests with large, dangling tree roots, offering an authentic tropical forest exploration experience.

3. Macro Photography: Given the exquisite detail of the fossils—from leaf structures to petrified wood fibers—this area is a paradise for nature photographers.

Best Time to Visit

Visits to Merangin Geopark are highly influenced by river water levels. The best time to visit is during the dry season between May and September. During this period, the water level of the Batang Merangin River tends to be stable and clear, making the fossils on the riverbanks more visible and not obscured by high water levels. Additionally, the trekking trails within the forest are safer and less slippery compared to the rainy season.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, this area is under strict protection. The preservation of these fossils heavily relies on tourist awareness to avoid excessive touching, let alone damaging or taking fossil fragments as souvenirs.

The local government, along with local communities (Pokdarwis), implements the principle of ecotourism, involving local residents as forest guardians and tour guides. Conservation efforts also focus on protecting river basins from illegal mining activities to maintain the river ecosystem and keep the fossils in their original positions (in-situ).
