The name "Liangkabori" originates from the local Muna language, where Liang means "cave" and Kabori means "write" or "paint". Literally, Liangkabori means "Writing Cave". Based on archaeological research and carbon dating of stone tool fragments and organic remains around the site, human activity in this cave complex is estimated to have begun during the Mesolithic period (Middle Stone Age).
Archaeologists believe that the paintings in Liangkabori date back to approximately 4,000 to 1,000 BCE. This period marks a significant transition from a hunting and gathering lifestyle towards early settled and agricultural practices. Unlike the caves in Maros-Pangkep, which are predominantly adorned with hand stencils, Liangkabori is distinguished by more complex and dynamic figurative motifs.

Liangkabori is a crucial key in mapping human migration in the Wallacea region. This site proves the cultural continuity between the indigenous people of Sulawesi and the Austronesian migration waves. Although no individual figures are recorded in written history (as it originates from the pre-literate era), the site is often associated with the Muna people's origin mythology concerning Wamelai, the first human figure in local beliefs, who is considered to have a spiritual connection with the cave environment.
In a more modern historical context, the site began to attract international attention after research reports from national archaeological teams and foreign researchers in the late 20th century. This discovery placed Muna Island on the world archaeological map as one of the most important rock art centers in Southeast Asia.
Cultural and Religious Importance
For the modern Muna people, Liangkabori is more than just a tourist or research object. The cave is considered a sacred place (posali) that holds the spirit of their ancestors. Before entering the cave, local communities often still practice certain etiquette as a form of respect.

The Muna Regency government, along with the central government, has undertaken several restoration and protection measures, including:
- Construction of protective fences around the painting areas to prevent direct contact from visitors.
- Arrangement of access roads and supporting facilities without damaging the original karst ecosystem.
- Socialization to local communities to become tour guides and site guardians (local guardians).
