About

Origins and Formation Period

The history of Enarotali Airfield began with the discovery of the Paniai Lakes complex (Wisselmeren) by Dutch Navy pilot Frits Wissel on December 31, 1936. This discovery surprised the colonial world at the time, revealing the existence of a large population of the Mee people living settled in an area previously thought to be uninhabited.

The construction of a land runway in Enarotali began in the late 1930s by the Dutch colonial government (NICA). Initially, access to Paniai could only be achieved via seaplanes landing on the surface of Paniai Lake. However, the need for more stable and permanent logistics spurred the construction of a runway on the lake's edge. The work involved thousands of local laborers from the Mee people who manually cleared the land using simple tools, transforming swamps and grasslands into a compacted dirt runway.

Architectural Characteristics and Construction Details

Technically, Enarotali Airfield possesses unique characteristics influenced by the extreme topography of the Central Mountains. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,750 meters above sea level, the runway is surrounded by high hills and is often covered by thick fog.

In its early construction phase, the airfield's architecture was highly functional and minimalist. The runway had an original length of about 800 meters with a surface that was initially a mix of grass and river gravel. One distinctive construction detail was its drainage system. Given the very high rainfall in Paniai, past workers built natural ditches that channeled water directly into Paniai Lake to prevent the runway from becoming quicksand. The initial terminal building was a simple wooden structure with a corrugated iron roof, reflecting the resilient yet humble architectural style of colonial outposts.

Historical Significance and Key Events

Enarotali Airfield is a silent witness to various major upheavals. During World War II, the area served as a strategic observation point. Allied and Dutch forces used Enarotali as a forward post to monitor the movements of Japanese troops who had occupied the coastal areas of Papua.

After the war, in the 1950s, the airfield became a center for the dissemination of religious and educational missions. Aircraft belonging to MAF (Missionary Aviation Fellowship) used Enarotali as a main base to reach remote valleys such as Kamu Valley and Mapia.

The most significant historical event occurred during the West Irian Liberation Struggle (Trikora). Enarotali was one of the targets of Indonesian military operations to break Dutch rule in the interior. After integration, the airfield became the main gateway for the Indonesian government to distribute development in the Paniai region, which at that time encompassed areas that are now Nabire, Dogiyai, and Deiyai Regencies.

Associated Figures and Historical Periods

Several important figures are recorded in the history of this place. Besides Frits Wissel, there is Jan van Eechoud, known as the "Father of Papua" by the Dutch government, who pioneered civilian administration in Enarotali and used this airfield as a coordination center.

From the Indonesian historical perspective, this airfield is closely linked to the period of President Soekarno's government in the effort to unify the territory. Pioneer pilots of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and civilian pilots, such as those from Merpati Nusantara airlines (in its time), are considered heroes who risked their lives to penetrate mountain passes to land in Enarotali, which was known for its dangerous wind shear (sudden changes in wind direction).

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Currently, Enarotali Airfield has undergone various modernizations to meet national aviation safety standards. Although its status is an active airport (Class III Airport), its historical value as a "Historical Site" is still recognized by the local community and the Paniai regional government.

Restoration efforts are more focused on maintaining the runway, which has now been asphalted for 1,010 meters to accommodate aircraft types like the Twin Otter or Cassa. The regional government continues to strive to maintain a balance between modernizing airport facilities and preserving the historical value of the surrounding area. Some remnants of old buildings around the airport are still maintained as reminders of the past, although the main preservation challenges are the high humidity levels and the rapid growth of residential settlements around the airport area.

Cultural and Social Importance

For the Mee people, Enarotali Airfield is a symbol of changing times. Before the advent of aircraft, community mobility was limited to footpaths in the dense jungle. The presence of this airfield drastically changed the socio-economic structure of Paniai. Culturally, the arrival of aircraft in Enarotali was often considered a social event where residents from distant villages came simply to watch or engage in barter activities around the airport area.

Religiously, the airfield is still revered as the entry point of modern civilization and religions (Christianity and Catholicism) that shape the identity of the Paniai community today. Its existence is considered a blessing that connects the "upper world" (mountains) with the "lower world" (coast).

Unique Historical Facts

One rarely known unique fact is that in its early operational days, navigation to Enarotali Airfield often relied solely on "visual sighting" of the Paniai Lake coastline. If the lake was covered in fog, pilots would not dare to land. Furthermore, Enarotali once served as a logistics hub for international botanical expeditions seeking rare flora and fauna in the highlands of Papua in the mid-20th century.

To this day, Enarotali Airfield stands tall as the transportation heart of Paniai. Every roar of an aircraft engine landing there is an echo of the long history of human struggle in conquering the harsh natural environment for the sake of progress and unity in the land of Central Papua.
