About
Traditional Philosophy and Architecture
This cultural center is built by preserving the aesthetic of traditional Sobey architecture. The main buildings in the complex reflect the structure of traditional houses that emphasize the philosophy of togetherness. The use of natural materials such as ironwood (kayu ulin) for support pillars, woven bamboo for walls, and sago palm thatch for roofs creates an atmosphere that is both sacred and open. The spaces within Kampung Budaya Sobey are designed to facilitate intergenerational dialogue, with the central part of the building often used as the Para-Para Adat—a formal discussion forum for resolving community issues or planning major ceremonies.
Variety of Sobey Arts and Performances
The main strength of Kampung Budaya Sobey lies in its curation of authentic artistic performances. One of the most prominent is the Tifa Sobey Dance. Unlike Tifa dances from mountainous regions or the southern coast, the dances here have a rhythm heavily influenced by natural sounds, especially the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
Every movement in the dance tells the philosophy of the relationship between humans, the sea, and the forest. Dancers wear costumes made from bark fibers adorned with natural dyes from roots. Furthermore, this cultural center regularly stages dance dramas that highlight local legends, such as the origin stories of the clans in Sarmi, which serve as a means of oral history education for visitors and the descendants of the Sobey tribe.
Handicrafts and Creative Economy
In a dedicated handicraft corridor, Kampung Budaya Sobey revives the traditional Noken making techniques of Sarmi, which have weaving patterns distinct from Noken from Wamena. Sobey Noken often uses fibers from the melinjo tree (genemo) processed manually into strong threads.
In addition, this center serves as a workshop for wood carvers. Sobey carvings are characterized by geometric motifs combined with the shapes of marine fauna such as turtles and skipjack tuna. The artisans here not only produce goods for sale but also open classes for tourists and local youth to learn carving. This program aims to ensure that the technical skills inherited from ancestors are not lost to time.
Educational Programs and Cultural Literacy
One of the flagship programs that distinguishes Kampung Budaya Sobey from other cultural centers is the Sobey Language School. Recognizing that the Sobey regional language is rarely spoken by Generation Z, this cultural center holds weekly classes. The curriculum covers basic vocabulary, sentence structure, and folk songs containing moral values.
In addition to language literacy, there is an "Adat Internship" program for youth. In this program, young people live within the cultural center for a specified period to learn traditional ceremony procedures, environmentally friendly traditional hunting techniques, and how to read star navigation used by ancient Sobey fishermen.
Sarmi Cultural Festival and Annual Celebrations
Kampung Budaya Sobey is the heart of various cultural festivals in Sarmi Regency. Every year, this center hosts the Sobey Coastal Festival. During this event, the Sasi Laut ritual is performed, a tradition of prohibiting the harvesting of marine products for a certain period to preserve the ecosystem. This festival attracts domestic and international tourists with its highly sacred traditional processions, followed by traditional boat rowing races and bamboo music competitions.
This event is not just a cultural exhibition but a form of gratitude for nature's abundance. Through this festival, Kampung Budaya Sobey has successfully positioned itself as a primary cultural tourism destination in North Papua, while also providing direct economic impact to the surrounding community through the sale of local culinary delights such as wrapped papeda and smoked fish preparations.
Preservation of Intangible Heritage and Documentation
Behind its physical activities, Kampung Budaya Sobey also serves as a documentation center. There are systematic efforts to record clan genealogies, incantations in traditional healing rituals, and mapping of customary territories. The management of the cultural center collaborates with academics to digitize folk tales in audio-visual format. This is done to ensure that the intellectual wealth of the Sobey tribe is preserved even after the traditional elders who hold this knowledge have passed away.
These preservation efforts also include protecting specific carving motifs from arbitrary claims or unethical commercialization. Kampung Budaya Sobey acts as a mediator to ensure that any utilization of Sobey culture respects customary rights and prevailing norms.
Role in Local Cultural Development and the Future
As the driving force of culture in Sarmi, this center has succeeded in changing the perception that traditional culture is something ancient. By integrating technology (such as using social media for promotion) and modern approaches in organizational management, Kampung Budaya Sobey proves that tradition can go hand in hand with progress.
This cultural center also serves as a conflict resolution forum. In Papua, where tribal ties are very strong, Kampung Budaya Sobey provides a neutral space for various clans to meet and dialogue. The values of peace taught in Sobey customs are re-disseminated through community activities, strengthening social cohesion amidst the increasingly heterogeneous diversity of the Sarmi community.
In the future, Kampung Budaya Sobey is projected to become a research center for Papuan coastal cultures. With the support of the local government and the spirit of community self-reliance, this place will continue to develop into a beacon of civilization that not only preserves the past but also illuminates the path for the future of Papuan generations who are proud of their identity. Through every beat of the Tifa and every weave of the Noken, Kampung Budaya Sobey continues to whisper to the world that identity is the most precious treasure to be guarded.
