About
Unique Landscape and Lush Mangrove Forests
The main characteristic that distinguishes Osi Island from other destinations in Maluku is its topography dominated by mangrove ecosystems. The island seems to "float" on clear shallow waters. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a long wooden bridge stretching over a kilometer, connecting the mainland of Seram Island to Osi Island through dense mangrove thickets.
The mangrove forest here is not just a green vista; it is a natural fortress protecting the island from abrasion. Decades-old mangrove vegetation with aerial roots emerging to the surface creates an exotic natural labyrinth. Beneath this wooden bridge, the crystal-clear seawater allows you to see the seabed, seagrass meadows, and small fish swimming freely without needing to swim out to sea.
Biodiversity and Underwater Ecosystems
Osi Island is situated in a waters area rich in biodiversity. Its coral reef ecosystem is still well-preserved, serving as a home to various colorful species of coral fish. Here, you can find healthy Colonies of Hard Corals and Soft Corals just a few meters from the wooden pier.
Another uniqueness is the presence of seabirds that often perch on the tips of mangrove trees during high tide. For ornithology enthusiasts, a morning in Osi Island offers a soothing symphony of bird songs. Furthermore, the seagrass ecosystem around the island serves as a feeding ground for green turtles and sometimes dugongs, indicating that the aquatic environment in West Seram is still very natural and minimally polluted.
Outdoor Experiences and Activities
The main activity on Osi Island is enjoying the natural tranquility through exploration of the wooden bridge. Walking or using local motorcycle taxi services on this wooden bridge provides a sensation of floating above the sea. Along the bridge, several stopping points or gazebos have been deliberately built for visitors to rest while enjoying the sea breeze.
For water activity lovers, snorkeling and free diving are a must. You don't need to rent a large boat to reach good diving spots; just jump in from the side of the bridge or pier, and a stunning underwater view will greet you. The calm water without strong currents makes it a safe place for beginners.
Additionally, fishing is also a favorite activity. The local community of Osi Island is known for its skilled fishermen. Tourists can rent traditional wooden boats to go out to sea and experience the thrill of fishing for tuna or grouper with local fishermen. As dusk approaches, the best activity is to sit on the edge of the pier to watch the sunset, which paints the vast Maluku sky with gradations of orange and purple.
Best Time to Visit
Osi Island can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the transition season or the east season, which is between April and October. During this period, the sea tends to be calmer, and underwater visibility is very clear, reaching over 15 meters, which is ideal for snorkeling activities.
Avoid visiting during the peak of the west season (December-February) if you plan to engage in intense sea activities, as sea waves around Seram waters can be higher, although Osi Island itself is relatively protected by the cluster of small islands surrounding it.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
The community of Osi Island has a high awareness of environmental conservation. This is evident from the strict prohibition of destructive fishing methods or discarding waste into the sea. The local community understands that the mangrove forests and coral reefs are their primary assets.
Several areas around the island have been designated as protected zones managed by customary law or local government. Mangrove replanting efforts are carried out periodically to ensure forest regeneration is maintained. Tourists are strongly encouraged to comply with local rules, such as not stepping on coral and bringing their plastic waste back to the mainland.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
To reach Osi Island, the journey begins from Ambon City to Hunimua Port (Liang) to cross by ferry to Waipirit Port on Seram Island. From Waipirit, the land journey continues towards West Seram Regency, specifically towards Piru and then to the nearest hamlet to Osi Island.
Despite its remote location, the facilities on Osi Island are quite adequate for ecotourism. There are accommodations in the form of homestays or simple resorts built on stilts over the water. Staying here offers a unique experience of listening to the sound of waves right beneath your bed. Local eateries are also available, serving fresh seafood dishes like papeda and yellow fish soup, which are characteristic of Maluku cuisine.
Osi Island is a destination that offers the luxury of tranquility and natural authenticity. It is not just a place for photos, but a place to reconnect with nature and learn how humans can coexist with a fragile yet incredibly beautiful marine ecosystem.
