Preserving the Footprints of Timor Civilization: The Cultural Depth of Boti Traditional Village
Nestled behind steep karst hills in Kiβe District, South Central Timor Regency, Boti Traditional Village stands as the last bastion of the indigenous Timor (Atoni Meto) culture. This village is not merely a settlement, but a living cultural center that still adheres firmly to the traditional order of Uis Neno (God) and Uis Pah (Nature). As a destination that blends spirituality, art, and ecology, Boti offers a profound experience of how humans live in harmony with nature without being eroded by the currents of modernization.

Leadership Structure and Life Philosophy
The primary uniqueness of Boti Village lies in its charismatic traditional leadership. The village is led by a Raja Boti (King of Boti) who acts as both a spiritual leader and a customary judge. The community's life is divided into two groups: Boti Dalam (Inner Boti), which still firmly holds the original Halaika beliefs, and Boti Luar (Outer Boti), which has embraced formal religion but still respects customs.
The life philosophy of the Boti people is rooted in self-reliance. They hold the principle that nature provides everything. This is reflected in their calendar system, which has nine days in a week, each day having a philosophical meaning related to human activities and respect for natural elements.

Cultural Activities and Traditional Programs
Visitors to Boti Village are not just spectators but are invited to immerse themselves in the rhythm of daily life filled with rituals. One of the most prominent cultural programs is participation in traditional farming activities. The Boti people do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides; they utilize local wisdom in managing the challenging dry land in Timor.
In addition, there is the practice of "Tutur Adat" (Customary Recitation) conducted by the village elders. This is an oral program where ancestral history, family lineage, and customary law are passed down to the younger generation under large trees or within the Lopo (round traditional houses with thatched roofs that reach the ground). This program ensures that values of honesty, prohibition of theft, and the obligation to share remain firmly ingrained.

Ikat Weaving Art and Distinct Handicrafts
The visual art in Boti is a manifestation of patience. Boti ikat weaving is known as one of the best in East Nusa Tenggara due to its consistency in using natural dyes. The women of Boti perform the entire process manually, from harvesting cotton, spinning yarn, to finding tree roots and leaves to produce the distinctive indigo and earthy brown colors.
The motifs of Boti weaving usually represent local flora and fauna, such as bird or crocodile motifs, which are considered to have a spiritual connection with the ancestors. Besides weaving, the men in Boti are skilled in wood carving and the creation of traditional musical instruments such as the Heo (string instrument) and Knobe (bamboo wind instrument). These handicrafts are not merely economic commodities but are part of their identity, worn in customary ceremonies.

Traditional Art and Music Performances
Music and dance are the breath of every ceremony in Boti. The Bonet dance is the most frequently performed in a large circle, symbolizing unity and equality. In this dance, the community holds hands while chanting customary verses containing prayers and hopes.
In addition, there are war dances performed by men wearing complete traditional attire, including a machete (Suni) and a headband adorned with chicken feathers. The music accompanying these dances is produced by the beating of gongs and drums with energetic yet meditative rhythms. These performances are usually held during the welcome of honored guests or harvest thanksgiving ceremonies.

Education and Community Involvement
Boti Traditional Village implements a unique community-based education system. While formal education is still valued, character education based on customs is the top priority. Children in Boti are taught from an early age to recognize types of medicinal plants in the forest and water conservation techniques.
Community involvement is clearly evident in the very strict "Gotong Royong" (mutual cooperation) system. If a community member intends to build a house or clear land, all villagers will lend a hand to help without expecting material compensation. This is a model of social education that teaches about healthy interdependence among humans.

Main Festivals and Customary Ceremonies
One of the most important moments in Boti is the thanksgiving ceremony after the corn harvest. This festival involves ritual offerings at sacred sites led directly by the Raja Boti. In addition, there is a seasonal change ceremony that marks the beginning of the planting season, where the community prays for Uis Pah to bestow fertility upon their land.
During this festival, Boti Village transforms into a magnificent cultural stage. The aroma of incense smoke, the sound of prayers chanted in the Uab Meto language, and the colorful ikat weaves create a magical atmosphere. This festival also serves as an arena for the young men and women of Boti to showcase their skills in oral arts and dance.

Preservation of Cultural and Environmental Heritage
Boti is a successful model of cultural preservation that goes hand in hand with environmental preservation. They have strict customary rules regarding tree felling and animal hunting. Anyone who violates these will be subject to severe customary sanctions. For the Boti people, the forest is a "mother" whose sanctity must be protected.
Preservation efforts are also carried out by rejecting the excessive use of plastic goods in the core village area. The traditional Lopo houses are maintained in their original form without using iron nails, but rather rope ties made from tree fibers. This makes Boti a living laboratory for sustainable vernacular architecture.

The Role of Boti Village in Local Cultural Development
As a cultural center in South Central Timor, Boti plays a crucial role as a guardian of the moral and ethical standards of the Timor people. The village often serves as a reference for researchers, culturalists, and the government in understanding the roots of authentic Timor culture. Boti proves that the progress of a society is not necessarily measured by how modern the technology they use is, but by how strongly they hold onto their identity and maintain the balance of nature.
The existence of Boti Village has a positive impact on the development of cultural-based tourism in NTT. By maintaining its originality, Boti has successfully attracted international interest without having to sacrifice its sacred values. This village serves as a reminder to all of us that amidst a rapidly moving world, there is a place in Timor where time seems to stand still, giving humans space to reflect again on their existence on earth.
