About

Historical Origins and Formation Period

The existence of Batu Angkek-Angkek is closely related to the figure of Datuk Bandaro Kayo, a highly influential traditional leader in the Sungayang region in ancient times. Historically, this stone was discovered during the construction of the main pillar (tonggak tuo) of a rumah gadang (traditional Minangkabau house) planned by Datuk Bandaro Kayo. According to oral tradition passed down through generations, this event occurred hundreds of years ago, estimated to be in the early period of Minangkabau adat consolidation in the Luhak Nan Tuo area.

During the excavation of the hole for the pillar, a strange phenomenon occurred, recorded in the local community's oral history. There was a local earthquake and a booming sound from within the earth. After digging deeper, a metallic stone was found, shaped like a turtle's back. Since its discovery, the stone has been considered to have a "soul" or supernatural power by the surrounding community, so the function of the rumah gadang construction was shifted to protect the stone's existence.

Physical Characteristics and Construction Details

Visually, Batu Angkek-Angkek has a brownish-copper color with an uneven surface texture, resembling ancient metal or a solid mineral that has been oxidized for centuries. Its size is not too large, but its weight is the main mystery that attracts thousands of tourists every year.

The stone is placed inside a wooden building resembling a small rumah gadang with typical Minangkabau architecture. This building serves as a stage or shelter to protect the stone from the weather. The construction around the stone is dominated by traditional wood carvings symbolizing the philosophy of Alam Takambang Jadi Guru (The Developing World Becomes a Teacher). There is no excessive use of cement or concrete in the core area of the stone, to maintain the authenticity of the historical atmosphere and the sacredness of the site.

The main historical value of Batu Angkek-Angkek lies in its function as a "divination medium" or spiritual instrument for the traditional community. In the past, before traditional leaders made major decisions—such as determining harvest times, appointing new penghulu (traditional leaders), or resolving disputes between nagari (villages)—they often consulted spiritually in front of this stone.

The most famous event, still practiced today, is the ritual of lifting the stone. It is said that if a person has a sincere intention and their wish will be granted by God, then the stone will feel light when lifted onto the lap. Conversely, even if lifted by a strong person, the stone will feel very heavy and unmoving if nature's "permission" or blessing is not on their side. This phenomenon historically strengthened the position of Nagari Balai Tabuah as a center of spirituality in Tanah Datar.

Important Figures and Connection to Royal Periods

The name Datuk Bandaro Kayo remains a central figure in the narrative of Batu Angkek-Angkek. He was not only a tribal chief but also considered a guardian of ancestral trust. The existence of this site is also often linked to the transitional period between Hindu-Buddhist influence from the Pagaruyung Kingdom and the Islamic era in West Sumatra.

Although this stone does not have written inscriptions like the Adityawarman Inscription Stone, its existence proves that the Minangkabau people at that time had a strong connection with natural objects as symbols of communication with the Almighty. Batu Angkek-Angkek is tangible proof of how local wisdom interacted with metaphysical beliefs within the social structure of the Tanah Datar community.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Currently, Batu Angkek-Angkek is managed independently by the descendants of Datuk Bandaro Kayo through generations, under the supervision of the Tanah Datar Regency Government and the local Cultural Office. This site has been designated as one of the leading historical tourist attractions on the West Sumatra tourism map.

Restoration efforts are more focused on maintaining the protective building (the house where the stone is located) to prevent it from decaying with age. The preservation policy here is very unique as it strongly emphasizes the aspect of "authenticity." Visitors are prohibited from taking actions that could damage the physical stone, and the procedure for lifting the stone is regulated with strict traditional etiquette. This aims to preserve the sacred and physical value of the stone for future generations.

Cultural and Religious Significance

In a cultural context, Batu Angkek-Angkek is a bridge between the past and the present. It represents the philosophy that humans must always seek guidance from the Creator in every step. Although the practice of lifting this stone has mystical elements, the local community has harmonized it with the strong Islamic values in West Sumatra. Before lifting the stone, one is required to recite the basmalah and pray to Allah SWT, so this ritual is viewed more as a meditative means and strengthening of intention, not a form of polytheism.

Unique Facts and Conclusion

One rarely known unique fact is that the weight of Batu Angkek-Angkek has never been scientifically confirmed permanently because the results always vary when manually weighed by different people. Furthermore, the booming sound that occurred during its discovery hundreds of years ago is still recounted in detail by the traditional elders as the moment of the "birth" of Sungayang's heritage.

Batu Angkek-Angkek stands as a silent monument witnessing the ebb and flow of history in Tanah Datar. It is not just an attraction for those who want to test their luck, but a symbol of the steadfastness of Minangkabau adat principles which state: Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (Custom is based on religious law, religious law is based on the Quran). Its existence continues to remind us of the rich civilization in the interior of West Sumatra that remains preserved amidst the currents of modernization.
