About

Origins and Early Historical Context

The existence of the Pertiwi Kindergarten building cannot be separated from the economic and political policies of the Dutch East Indies government in the eastern coastal region of Sumatra in the early 20th century. Around the 1900s to 1920s, Kuala Tungkal began to develop as an important port for plantation commodities such as rubber and copra. To oversee the governance and trade flow in the Onderafdeeling Tungkal region, the colonial government built administrative infrastructure, including official residences for their high-ranking officials.

This building was erected as the official residence and office for Dutch officials assigned to manage the coastal region of Jambi. Its location was highly strategic, situated in the city center close to water access, reflecting the colonial urban planning pattern that always placed centers of power at points of logistical distribution. At that time, this building was the grandest structure in its surroundings, symbolizing the presence of the "State" in the Malay land of Jambi.

Indische Empire Style Architecture: Elegance on Peat Land

Architecturally, the Former Resident's Official Residence adopts the Indische Empire Style, an architectural style that developed in the Dutch East Indies in the 18th and 19th centuries, which was then adapted to Indonesia's tropical climate. The most prominent characteristic of this building is its massive structure with thick walls that function as natural heat insulators.

The main structure of the building is dominated by large pillars supporting a spacious veranda. The high ceilings were designed to ensure smooth air circulation, considering the high humidity in Kuala Tungkal due to its seaside location. One of the unique construction features is the use of high-quality ironwood (ulin) material in certain parts and foundations specifically designed to withstand the peat and swamp soil characteristics of the Tanjung Jabung Barat region. Large windows with wooden louvers provide maximum natural lighting while adding a classic colonial aesthetic.

Strategic Role in the War of Independence

As time went on, the function of this building shifted with the political dynamics in Indonesia. During the Japanese occupation (1942-1945), the building was temporarily taken over by the Japanese military authorities as a local command center. However, its most crucial historical value occurred during the physical revolution after the proclamation of independence in 1945.

When the Dutch attempted to re-occupy the Jambi region through military aggression, this building became a silent witness to negotiations and movements of local fighters in Tanjung Jabung. After Indonesia's sovereignty was fully recognized, the building was repurposed as the official residence for regional government officials of Tanjung Jabung Regency (before its division). It was here that important decisions regarding the early development of the Jambi coastal region were formulated by the pioneers of local governance.

Transformation into an Educational Hub: Pertiwi Kindergarten

Its transition into Pertiwi Kindergarten occurred several decades after independence. The decision to repurpose this historic building into an early childhood education facility was a strategic step to keep the building functional and prevent it from falling into disrepair. The name "Pertiwi" itself refers to the organization of civil servants' wives (Dharma Wanita) who were actively promoting children's education at the regional level at that time.

Although now filled with the cheerful sounds of children and typical school decorations, the original structure of the building has been preserved. The spacious rooms that were once formal living rooms or the Resident's offices have now been partitioned into classrooms. This transformation gives a new dimension to this historical site: from a rigid symbol of colonial authority to an inclusive and educational public space.

Preservation Efforts and Cultural Heritage Status

The Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency Government, through its local Culture Office, has designated the Former Resident's Official Residence as a cultural heritage site. This status is important to protect the building from the threats of uncontrolled modernization or demolition. Restoration efforts so far have focused on roof maintenance and repainting without altering the original structural form of the building.

The main challenge in preserving Pertiwi Kindergarten is natural factors. Given its location in a tidal area, the threat of material decay due to high salinity and groundwater fluctuations is very real. Therefore, routine maintenance of wooden materials and walls is a priority in the preservation agenda for this site.

Cultural Significance and Local Identity

For the people of Kuala Tungkal, Pertiwi Kindergarten is more than just a school or an old building. It is the city's identity, connecting the current generation with the long history of the formation of Tanjung Jabung Barat. The existence of this building provides a narrative about how a port city grew from a colonial administrative center into an independent regional government center.

Socially, the use of this historic building as a school instills historical awareness in children from an early age. They learn under the shelter of architecture that is over a century old, which indirectly fosters an appreciation for the nation's cultural heritage.

Unique Facts and Hidden Details

One of the unique facts about this building is the presence of several original ornaments that have survived, such as patterned floor tiles (tegel) imported directly from Europe during its construction. Furthermore, the ancient drainage system surrounding the building demonstrates the advanced thinking of past architects in anticipating tidal floods in Kuala Tungkal.

To this day, Pertiwi Kindergarten (Former Resident's Official Residence) stands strong as one of the most iconic landmarks in Tanjung Jabung Barat. It is a reminder that behind the rapid development of modern ports and the oil and gas industry in this region, there are historical roots deeply embedded in the foundations of this colonial building. Through continuous preservation, it is hoped that this building will continue to tell future generations about the past that shaped the face of Kuala Tungkal today.
