About
Origin and Founding Period
The history of Aitumeiri Hill cannot be separated from the missionary and educational missions that began in the early 20th century. This site began to occupy a crucial position on the historical map in 1923. The establishment of an educational complex on this hill was an initiative of two renowned Dutch missionaries, Isak Samuel Kijne and his wife.
At that time, Kijne believed that to build Papua, character education and literacy must be the main foundation. He chose Aitumeiri Hill as the location to build the Opleidingsschool voor Volksonderwijzers (OVVO) or the Church Teacher Training School. The choice of location on the hilltop was not without reason; besides its cool and tranquil air, the view towards Wondama Bay provided spiritual serenity that supported the teaching and learning process.
Architecture and Construction Details
Architecturally, the remnants of the buildings at Aitumeiri Hill reflect the functional yet adaptive colonial Dutch East Indies style to the tropical climate. The original construction of the school and dormitory buildings in the 1920s was dominated by the use of local materials such as ironwood (kayu besi) and natural stone laid with traditional cement techniques.
One of the most iconic architectural elements is the "Stone of Civilization" or known as the Stone of Inspiration. This is a natural rock formation located at the summit of the hill, where I.S. Kijne often sat to contemplate and write his works. Around this area, there are cement stairs connecting the various levels of the hill, which have undergone several renovations but still maintain their original paths. The remaining main buildings have now been restored, retaining the characteristic gable roof shape and large windows typical of early 20th-century school buildings to ensure good air circulation.
Historical Significance and Important Events
Aitumeiri Hill is the birthplace of Papua's first intellectuals. Through the school founded by Kijne, a comprehensive educational curriculum was introduced, covering theology, music, agriculture, and literacy. The most historic event that occurred here was the creation of hymns and local language literature compiled by Kijne.
It was on this hill that the song "Hai Tanahku Papua" (Oh My Land Papua), which is now the cultural anthem of the Papuan people, was created. Kijne wrote lyrics that evoked awareness of the identity and self-worth of the Papuan people under the umbrella of civilized education. Furthermore, Aitumeiri Hill bears silent witness to the transition from oral tradition to written tradition for the tribes around Wondama Bay and Papua in general.
Important Figure: Isak Samuel Kijne
The name Isak Samuel Kijne is the soul of Aitumeiri Hill. He was not only a missionary but also an ethnomusicologist, linguist, and accomplished educator. Kijne greatly valued local culture; he did not erase Papuan identity but integrated it into universal values through education.
Together with his students who came from all corners of Papua—from Merauke to Sorong—Kijne formed an educated community that would later become the driving force of bureaucracy and the church in Papua. Kijne's influence was so great that the Wondama people bestowed upon him the honorary title of father of civilization.
Religious and Cultural Importance
For Christians in Papua, Aitumeiri Hill is a sacred pilgrimage site. Every year, thousands of people visit this hill to commemorate the arrival of "Light" in Papua. This site is considered a place where God inspired humans to build civilization through knowledge.
Culturally, Aitumeiri Hill is a symbol of unity. Because the school here accepted students from various different tribes (often those who were previously in conflict), this hill became the first peace laboratory in Papua. The values of tolerance and brotherhood taught here are still felt today by the people of Teluk Wondama, who are known for being very open and friendly.
Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts
Currently, Aitumeiri Hill has been designated as a Cultural Heritage Site by the Teluk Wondama Regency Government and is supported by the West Papua Provincial Government. The government recognizes that this site has outstanding universal value for the history of Eastern Indonesia.
Restoration efforts are carried out periodically on the old buildings, including the repair of the uphill access path (stairs), which are now neatly cemented to facilitate tourists and pilgrims. In addition, there are constructions of monuments and dioramas explaining the history of education at the site. The local government is also proposing Aitumeiri Hill as a UNESCO World Heritage site under the category of educational and religious historical sites.
Unique Historical Facts
There are several unique facts about Aitumeiri Hill that are rarely known to the public:
1. The Magical Stone of Inspiration: It is said that many great Papuan leaders spent hours sitting on the stone where Kijne meditated to seek guidance or inspiration before making major decisions.
2. The First Multi-Ethnic School: Before the concept of formal national integration existed, Aitumeiri already practiced cross-tribal education that united young people from the central mountains to the coastal areas.
3. Center for Church Music: Many songs in the church hymnal (Psalms and Spiritual Songs) used throughout Eastern Indonesia were translated or arranged on this hill.
In conclusion, Aitumeiri Hill stands tall as a reminder that a nation's great transformation does not begin with military might, but from a quiet hilltop through the stroke of a pen and sincerity in teaching. Preserving Aitumeiri means preserving the collective memory of the civilized, knowledgeable, and faithful Papuan human identity.
