The Grand Traces of Hindu-Islam Civilization: History and Architecture of Indra Patra Fortress
Indra Patra Fortress is not merely a silent pile of coral rocks on the shores of Ladong Beach, Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar Regency. This site bears silent witness to the transition of great civilizations at the northern tip of Sumatra Island, spanning from the era of Hindu influence to the glory of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate. As one of the oldest ancient sites in Aceh, Indra Patra holds narratives of maritime defense, cultural acculturation, and the resilience of past architecture.

Origins and Construction Periodization
Historically, Indra Patra Fortress is believed to have been built in the 7th century AD by the first Hindu Kingdom in Aceh, the Lamuri Kingdom. The name "Indra Patra" itself is deeply infused with Sanskrit influence, referring to the strong Indian cultural influence in the coastal region of the Strait of Malacca at that time. Its primary purpose was as a defensive fortress to repel pirate attacks and expansions from external kingdoms seeking to control the spice trade route.
The existence of this fortress proves that long before Islam became Aceh's primary identity, this region already had a well-established and organized defense system. When Islamic influence began to enter and the Lamuri Kingdom transformed into part of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate, the fortress's function was not abandoned but rather strengthened and expanded.

Unique Architecture and Construction Techniques
Architecturally, Indra Patra Fortress possesses very specific characteristics that distinguish it from European colonial fortresses. The main material composing the fortress walls is very solid mountain rock and coral. The most unique aspect is the use of traditional binding materials; people of that era used a mixture of lime, crushed seashells, clay, and egg whites as natural cement.
The fortress complex originally consisted of several structures, but currently, the two main buildings that still stand strong and can be witnessed are the primary structures. The main fortress has a square plan measuring approximately 70 x 70 meters with wall heights reaching 3 to 5 meters. The wall thickness reaches 2 meters, strong enough to withstand the impact of ancient cannons and the force of sea waves.
Inside the fortress area, there is a structure resembling a stupa or dome, within which lies a well or freshwater source. The presence of a well in the center of the fortress, located very close to the sea, demonstrates the sophistication of the sanitation and logistics system for the guarding soldiers, ensuring they did not lack clean water during sieges.

Historical Significance and Associated Figures
Indra Patra Fortress played a vital role in Aceh's maritime defense strategy. During the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607β1636), this fortress was part of the "Defense Triangle" network along with Inong Balee Fortress and Indra Puri Fortress.
One of the most prominent historical facts is the fortress's connection with Admiral Malahayati, the first female admiral in the modern world. Under Malahayati's command, the "Inong Balee" troops (widows of war) used Indra Patra Fortress as a monitoring and defense base to intercept Portuguese and Dutch ships attempting to enter Aceh's waters through the Strait of Malacca. Small openings in the fortress walls facing the sea served as gun emplacements, ready to unleash fire towards enemy ships.

Religious and Cultural Transition
Although built by a Hindu civilization, Indra Patra Fortress underwent a process of functional "Islamization" without destroying its original structure. This phenomenon shows tolerance and intelligent asset utilization by the Aceh Sultanate. Parts of the fortress that might have been used for Hindu religious rituals later transitioned into facilities for Islamic military defense.
This site also serves as archaeological evidence that Aceh was a meeting point of various civilizations. Indian architectural influences (Pre-Angkorian style) are visible in the arch shapes and roof structures in some small parts of the fortress, which then blended with the typical local Acehnese military functionality.

Preservation Efforts and Current Status
The Indonesian government, through the Cultural Preservation Center, has designated Indra Patra Fortress as a Cultural Heritage Site. Restoration efforts have been undertaken several times to strengthen the walls that have begun to weaken due to seawater abrasion and moss growth. However, the biggest challenge arose during the 2004 Tsunami disaster. Despite being hit by devastating waves, the main structure of Indra Patra Fortress miraculously remained standing strong, while modern buildings around it were flattened. This proves the resilience of the construction techniques of Acehnese ancestors.
Currently, Indra Patra Fortress is a leading historical tourist destination in Aceh Besar. Visitors can climb the fortress walls to enjoy panoramic views of the Strait of Malacca, imagining how past soldiers stood guard, monitoring the horizon.

Unique Facts and World Heritage
One little-known unique fact is that the Indra Patra complex was actually part of a series of visually connected fortresses. In the past, communication between fortresses was carried out using smoke signals or mirrors. Indra Patra's strategic location allowed it to send rapid signals to the royal capital if a threat was detected from the sea.
With an age exceeding a thousand years, Indra Patra Fortress is more than just a tourist object; it is a monument to technological resilience. It is a reminder that Aceh was once a respected maritime power center in Southeast Asia, with infrastructure capable of transcending eras, religions, and various natural upheavals. Its existence demands that current generations continue to preserve and learn from the values of local wisdom embedded in each of its coral stones.
