In Javanese cosmology and Eastern spirituality, the lotus flower symbolizes purity, enlightenment, and the ability to remain beautiful even when growing from mud.

The lotus "crown" structure at the tower's apex is designed with petals that appear to bloom symmetrically when viewed from various angles (360 degrees). The use of this organic form provides an interesting visual contrast to the tower's body, which tends to be rigid and functional, creating an aesthetic dialogue between the robustness of engineering structure and the softness of natural forms.

Standing at a height of 114 meters, the Teratai Observation Tower is one of the tallest structures in Central Java. Its construction involves modern civil engineering techniques that consider wind loads and seismic stability, given that the Banyumas region has dynamic geographical characteristics.

The tower's body is built using a reinforced concrete system with a strong central core to support four functional floors at the top. One of the most talked-about innovations is the use of glass panels on the observation floors. On certain floors, visitors can walk on transparent glass floors, giving a sensation of floating at height. Technically, this glass is a double-layered tempered laminated glass designed to withstand the dynamic load of a large number of people, making it an architectural element that offers an adrenaline-pumping experience along with high-level safety.

The construction of the Teratai Observation Tower coincided with the development of the new Purwokerto City area, a regency government initiative to alleviate the density of the old city center and create a new economic growth hub. The project began intensive work during the leadership of Regent Achmad Husein, with the vision of making the Jalan Bung Karno area the "golden axis" of Banyumas.

The tower was inaugurated in April 2022. Its presence is seen as a milestone in contemporary architecture in Banyumas, marking the city's transition from an agricultural trading center to a modern service and tourism city. Its development also involved collaboration between local architects and professional construction consultants to ensure that the building is not only beautiful but also structurally long-lasting.

Facilities and Visitor Experience

The spatial experience within the Teratai Observation Tower is designed in stages to accommodate various activities. The tower is divided into five main floors accessible by high-speed elevators:

1. Ground Floor (Lobby): Serves as the guest reception area and information center for the tower's architecture.

2. Floors 1 & 2: Commercial areas and meeting rooms often used for formal events and local art exhibitions.

3. Floor 3: The main observation point with the glass floor, which is the main highlight. From here, visitors can see the panorama of Mount Slamet to the north and the entire landscape of Purwokerto city.

4. Floor 4: An open area beneath the lotus "crown" that allows visitors to directly feel the high-altitude wind.

The lighting design at night is also a crucial element. The integrated LED lighting system allows the tower to change colors according to the theme of major holiday commemorations, making it a light "meru" visible from kilometers away.

Socially, the Teratai Observation Tower has successfully become a "third place" for the community. Its magnificent architecture creates a sense of collective pride for the people of Banyumas. Its existence proves that architectural innovation does not always have to be centered in Jakarta or other large metropolitan cities.
