The History of Batam: From Spice Route to Modern Industrial Hub
Batam, a strategic island in the Riau Islands Province with an area of 1,024.2 km², holds a long historical narrative as the northern gateway of the archipelago. Directly bordering Singapore, Batam's geographical position has made it a crucial point in the political and economic dynamics of the Strait of Malacca since ancient times.
##
Historical Roots and the Sultanate Era
Batam's history dates back long before the colonial era. According to Chinese records from the Tang Dynasty, this region was already inhabited by the "Orang Laut" (Sea People) who served as guardians of the waters for the Srivijaya Kingdom. In the 16th century, Batam became an integral part of the Johor-Riau Sultanate. One of the key figures in its early history was Admiral Hang Nadim, whose name is now immortalized as the international airport in Batam. He was a hero who fiercely resisted Portuguese attempts to control the spice trade route in the Strait of Malacca. Local oral traditions also record the significant role of the Yang Dipertuan Muda Riau (Younger Ruler of Riau) in managing the islands around Batam as a naval defense base.
##
Colonial Era and the Treaty of London
The colonial period brought significant changes through the Treaty of London in 1824. This agreement between Great Britain and the Kingdom of the Netherlands divided spheres of influence, administratively separating Batam from Singapore. Batam remained under Dutch East Indies influence but maintained close cultural ties with the overseas territories. During this period, Batam was known as a producer of gambier and pepper, with the oldest recorded settlement located in the Nongsa area, founded by Raja Isa bin Raja Ali (Raja Muda Riau V) in 1829 through a mandate from the Sultan of Riau-Lingga.
##
Independence Era and Industrial Transformation
After Indonesia's independence, Batam's status began to transform radically in the 1970s. Under the leadership of President Soeharto, Batam was designated as a logistics and operational base for the oil and gas industry through Pertamina. The central figure in Batam's modernization was Dr. B.J. Habibie, who served as the Chairman of the Batam Authority (now BP Batam) since 1978. Habibie envisioned Batam as "Indonesia's Singapore" by building massive infrastructure, including the six iconic Barelang bridges (an abbreviation for Batam, Rempang, and Galang) connecting the main islands.

Cultural Heritage and Historical Sites
Culturally, Batam is a stronghold of Malay culture. Traditions such as the Tari Persembahan (Offering Dance) and Gazal music are still preserved in traditional ceremonies. One of the most unique historical sites is the Galang Refugee Camp (1979-1996), which provided refuge for hundreds of thousands of "Boat People" refugees from Vietnam. This site is now an international humanitarian monument connecting Batam's local history with global geopolitical issues. Additionally, the Tomb of the Descendants of Raja Isa in Nongsa serves as a symbol of respect for the ancestors who paved the way for Batam's civilization.
Now, as a Free Trade Zone (FTZ), Batam has evolved from a cluster of fishing islands into a world-class manufacturing and tourism hub, without abandoning its strong Malay identity.
