History of Gayo Lues: Land of a Thousand Hills in the Heart of Aceh

Gayo Lues, known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," is an inland region of Aceh with unique mountainous geographical characteristics. Despite its high altitude, this region has strong historical connections to the coast of Aceh through traditional trade routes. With an area of 5,566.63 km², Gayo Lues plays a vital role in the historical constellation of Aceh in the northern part of Indonesia.

Origins and the Sultanate Era

Historically, the people of Gayo Lues were part of the Gayo ethnic group inhabiting the highlands. During the era of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate, this region served as a natural defense fortress and a provider of important commodities such as forest and agricultural products. The social structure of its community was led by Reje (Kings) within a strong customary governance system. The relationship between Gayo Lues and the Sultanate's center in Banda Aceh was close, especially in the spread of Islam brought by scholars through river and hill routes.

Colonial Era and People's Resistance

The resilience of the Gayo Lues people was tested when the Dutch attempted to establish their power in the interior of Aceh. One of the most tragic yet heroic events was the Dutch military expedition led by G.C.E. van Daalen in 1904. In their effort to conquer the Gayo highlands, the Marsose troops faced fierce resistance in the people's defense forts. One of the fiercest battle points occurred in Kuta Reh, where hundreds of Gayo warriors fell defending their homeland. This resistance marked a dark chapter of colonialism in Aceh, but at the same time, it proved the unyielding spirit of the local community. Local figures continued to wage guerrilla warfare in the Gayo Lues forests for decades thereafter, making this region one of the most difficult areas for the Dutch to fully conquer.

Independence Era and Regency Formation

After the proclamation of Indonesian independence in 1945, Gayo Lues became part of the Central Aceh Regency. However, aspirations to manage their own region continued to grow for the acceleration of development. After a long struggle by local leaders, Gayo Lues officially became its own regency on April 10, 2002, based on Law Number 4 of 2002. Blangkejeren was designated as the regency capital, which now serves as the center of economic and governmental growth in the region.

Cultural Heritage and Modern Identity

The rich history of Gayo Lues is reflected in its cultural heritage, especially the Tari Saman. This dance, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is not just a performance art but a representation of Islamic values, solidarity, and the long history of the Gayo people's struggle. Besides Saman, the Bersenue tradition and Gayo oral literature remain preserved to this day.

Geographically, Gayo Lues borders nine administrative regions, including Central Aceh to the north and Southeast Aceh to the south. The presence of the Gunung Leuser National Park, which traverses this region, makes it the lungs of the world with high ecological historical value. Currently, Gayo Lues continues to transform itself as an agribusiness center, particularly for coffee and citronella, while maintaining its historical roots as a guardian of tradition and sovereignty in the interior of Aceh.
