About

Landscape and Geological Uniqueness: The Legend of Batu Jung

The main characteristic that distinguishes Way Hawang Beach from other beaches in Bengkulu is the presence of "Batu Jung" (Junk Stone). Located about 50 meters from the shoreline, there is a giant coral formation resembling a sailing ship (jung). Geologically, this is the result of thousands of years of sea abrasion, but for the local community, this stone is the manifestation of the legend of Si Pahit Lidah (The Bitter Tongue) who cursed a ship to turn into stone.

The beach structure has a wide and smooth white sand base, contrasting with some areas adorned with clusters of sturdy black coral. The seawater has a color gradation from turquoise at the edges to deep blue in the interior, reflecting the clarity of the water, which has not been polluted by industrial waste. Its perfectly curved coastline offers an unlimited panoramic view of the open Indian Ocean.

Coastal Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Way Hawang Beach is more than just a stretch of sand. This area is part of a rich coastal ecosystem. Along the coastline, lush and neatly arranged Casuarina equisetifolia trees thrive. The presence of this vegetation not only provides natural shade but also serves as a green barrier to prevent abrasion and tsunamis.

In terms of fauna, the waters around Way Hawang are home to various types of coral fish and mollusks. During certain seasons, local fishermen often find turtles landing in quieter areas to lay eggs, indicating that the environmental quality here still supports the life cycle of sensitive marine biota. Its underwater ecosystem, although dominated by the strong currents of the Indian Ocean, has coral reef spots that are home to small marine ecosystems amidst the Batu Jung formations.

Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience

For adventure and nature lovers, Way Hawang Beach offers a diverse spectrum of activities:

1. Batu Jung Exploration: When the sea recedes, visitors can walk closer to Batu Jung. The sensation of standing under the shadow of this giant rock formation provides a different perspective on the power of nature.

2. Nature Photography: With the iconic Batu Jung as a backdrop, this beach is a paradise for landscape photographers. The golden hour moments during sunset here are considered among the best in Sumatra because the sun appears to set right beside the stone ship formation.

3. Coastal Culinary Tourism: Around the beach area, there are bamboo gazebos serving Kaur's specialty cuisine, such as Yellow-Cooked Octopus or octopus satay, whose ingredients are directly sourced by local fishermen from Way Hawang waters.

4. Camping and Family Picnics: The expanse of grass and the area under the Casuarina equisetifolia trees are ideal for camping activities. The sound of the strong Indian Ocean waves crashing provides a calming atmosphere at night.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Way Hawang Beach is between April and September. During this period, the weather on the west coast of Sumatra tends to be clear with low rainfall (dry season). The sea breeze is not too strong, making the seawater appear clearer and calmer.

If you want to witness a unique natural phenomenon, come in the late afternoon around 5:30 PM WIB. Way Hawang Beach's west-facing position offers a dramatic silhouette of Batu Jung against a purple-orange sky.

Conservation Status and Environmental Protection

The Kaur Regency government, along with the community of Way Hawang Village, has designated this area as an environmentally friendly tourism zone. Environmental protection awareness here is quite high, evident from the regular efforts to replant Casuarina equisetifolia trees. Visitors are strictly prohibited from damaging coral formations or illegally taking marine life.

The local community also plays a role as environmental supervisors. They ensure that facility development around the beach does not damage the natural structure of the beach. Zoning between trading areas and beach conservation areas is arranged in such a way that domestic waste does not flow directly into the sea.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Way Hawang Beach is located in Way Hawang Village, Maje District, Kaur Regency. The journey to this location can be reached in about 15-20 minutes from the center of Bintuhan City, the capital of Kaur Regency. If coming from Bengkulu City, the land journey takes about 4 to 5 hours along the western Sumatra cross-route, which offers charming coastal views along the way.

  • Spacious parking area under the shade of trees.
  • Mushola (prayer room) and clean toilet facilities.
  • Gazebos or saungs for resting.
  • Local stalls selling food and light drinks.

Way Hawang Beach is a destination that offers more than just sea views; it is a blend of geological wonders, biodiversity, and tourist comfort. For anyone seeking tranquility amidst the grandeur of Sumatra's wild nature, Way Hawang is the perfect answer. Preserving the sustainability of this beach is not only the responsibility of the management but also the responsibility of every visitor so that this "Stone Ship" remains standing firm to welcome future generations.
