About

Geological Characteristics and Natural Wonders

Mahangetang Volcano is part of the active Pacific Ring of Fire. Unlike typical volcanoes that soar high into the sky, the summit of Banua Wuhu lies only about 4 to 8 meters below sea level during low tide. The volcano stands approximately 400 meters tall when measured from the seabed, but its gently sloping summit makes it a highly exotic diving destination.

The main characteristic that distinguishes Mahangetang from other marine destinations is the presence of continuous columns of air bubbles emerging from crevices in the seabed rocks. These bubbles are sulfurous gases released by volcanic activity beneath. This phenomenon creates a scene akin to "champagne underwater," where divers feel as if they are swimming in a giant glass of carbonated water. The water temperature around these gas vents is also warmer, ranging from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius, providing a natural spa sensation amidst the cold seawater.

Resilient Biodiversity and Ecosystem

Despite being in an active volcanic area with high sulfur content, the ecosystem around Mahangetang exhibits remarkable resilience. Coral reefs thrive here, covering the slopes of the underwater volcano with dramatic formations. You can find various types of hard corals and soft corals that have adapted to the extreme environmental conditions.

The presence of volcanic gases has not diminished the biodiversity. Divers often encounter schools of pelagic fish, turtles, and various colorful reef fish such as nudibranchs, clownfish, and moorish idols. The contrast between the dark grayish volcanic rocks and the vibrant colors of the coral reefs creates a striking and artistic visual aesthetic, making it a paradise for underwater photographers.

Outdoor Experiences and Activities

The main attractions of Mahangetang are, of course, diving and snorkeling. For professional divers, exploring the slopes of Banua Wuhu offers a unique challenge due to occasionally strong ocean currents. Exploring the igneous rock formations formed from lava that cooled thousands of years ago provides a new perspective on how the earth was formed.

For those who prefer snorkeling, the clarity of the water around Mahangetang Island allows you to clearly see the gas bubbles rising to the surface from above. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the beauty of Mahangetang Island's coast, which features clean white sand and lush coconut vegetation. The local fishing community's life on the island also offers an authentic cultural tourism nuance, where the hospitality of the Sangihe people will welcome every guest.

One unique experience often enjoyed by tourists is feeling the warmth of the water at specific points. However, visitors are reminded to remain cautious and always follow the instructions of local guides, as at some points, the water temperature can become very hot and dangerous to the skin if in direct contact with the gas source.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Mahangetang Underwater Volcano is during the dry season, which is between April and October. During this period, sea conditions tend to be calm with excellent underwater visibility, reaching up to 20 to 30 meters.

Avoid visiting during the west season (December-February) as sea waves in Sangihe waters can become very high, making boat access to the location difficult and reducing safety levels during diving. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to dive in the morning when sunlight penetrates the water optimally, making the light reflections on the volcanic bubbles appear more stunning.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As an area with high geological and biological value, the preservation of Mahangetang heavily relies on tourist awareness. The coral ecosystem here is very sensitive to physical touch and pollution. Tourists are strictly prohibited from touching, stepping on, or taking any part of the coral reefs or volcanic rocks.

The local government of the Sangihe Islands, along with the local community, continuously strives to keep these waters clean from plastic waste. Tourists are expected to take their trash back and not discard food scraps into the sea, which can disrupt the nutrient balance for local marine life. Mahangetang's status as an unofficial world natural heritage site demands shared responsibility to maintain its authenticity.

Accessibility and Facilities

Reaching Mahangetang Underwater Volcano requires a rather long but worthwhile journey. The trip starts from Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi. You can take a flight to Naha Airport in Tahuna (the capital of Sangihe Islands) or use a fast ferry from Manado Port, with a travel time of about 6-8 hours.

From Tahuna, the journey continues by renting a local fishing boat to Mahangetang Island, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by sea. Due to its remote location, facilities around the underwater volcano are still very limited. It is highly recommended to bring your own diving or snorkeling equipment or rent it in Tahuna before departing.

For accommodation, tourists can stay in hotels or guesthouses in Tahuna city. However, for those who want a closer experience with nature, some local houses on Mahangetang Island offer simple homestay concepts. Make sure you bring enough drinking water and oxygen tanks if you plan to dive multiple times, as there are no tank refilling facilities on the island.

Mahangetang Underwater Volcano is a tangible proof of the grandeur of Indonesia's nature. It is a meeting point between the power of fire from the earth's core and the tranquility of the ocean water, a must-visit destination for true nature lovers seeking another side of Indonesia's underwater beauty.
