Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Mahangetang Underwater Volcano is during the dry season, which is between April and October. During this period, sea conditions tend to be calm with excellent underwater visibility, reaching up to 20 to 30 meters.

Avoid visiting during the west season (December-February) as sea waves in Sangihe waters can become very high, making boat access to the location difficult and reducing safety levels during diving. Furthermore, it is highly recommended to dive in the morning when sunlight penetrates the water optimally, making the light reflections on the volcanic bubbles appear more stunning.

You can take a flight to Naha Airport in Tahuna (the capital of Sangihe Islands) or use a fast ferry from Manado Port, with a travel time of about 6-8 hours.

From Tahuna, the journey continues by renting a local fishing boat to Mahangetang Island, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by sea. Due to its remote location, facilities around the underwater volcano are still very limited. It is highly recommended to bring your own diving or snorkeling equipment or rent it in Tahuna before departing.

For accommodation, tourists can stay in hotels or guesthouses in Tahuna city. However, for those who want a closer experience with nature, some local houses on Mahangetang Island offer simple homestay concepts. Make sure you bring enough drinking water and oxygen tanks if you plan to dive multiple times, as there are no tank refilling facilities on the island.
