Exploring the Traces of Wawonii Civilization: The History and Grandeur of Benteng Kontu

Konawe Kepulauan Regency, which geographically encompasses the entire Wawonii Island in Southeast Sulawesi, holds historical treasures that bear silent witness to the resilience of the local community in facing colonialism and the political dynamics of past kingdoms. One of the most monumental legacies on this island is Benteng Kontu. Strategically located at a height in the West Wawonii region, this fortress is not merely a pile of stones, but a representation of sovereignty, traditional military architectural intelligence, and a symbol of the Wawonii people's resistance.

Origin and Background of Establishment

Benteng Kontu is estimated to have begun construction in stages from the 16th century and reached its peak of utilization from the 18th to the 19th century. The name "Kontu" in the local language literally refers to "stone" or "stony hill," reflecting the basic materials and geographical location of this fortress.

The establishment of this fortress is inseparable from the strategic position of Wawonii Island, which lies on the shipping route between the Sultanate of Buton, the Kingdom of Konawe, and access to the waters of Maluku. At that time, the threat of pirate attacks and the expansionist efforts of the Dutch colonial power (VOC) demanded a robust defense system. Benteng Kontu was built as a primary defense point and a place of refuge for the local population during threats from the sea.

Traditional Architecture and Construction Techniques

Architecturally, Benteng Kontu demonstrates local intelligence in utilizing natural materials. The fortress was built using arrangements of mountain stones or coral stones stacked in such a way without the use of cement or modern adhesives. This technique is known as "susun timbun" (stacked fill), where the stability of the fortress walls relies solely on the slope and precision of stone placement.

The fortress walls have a varying thickness of 1 to 2 meters with a height reaching 3 meters on certain sides. The area inside the fortress is quite spacious, capable of accommodating hundreds of people during times of war. One of the unique characteristics of Benteng Kontu is the presence of several narrow and winding entrances (gates), a military tactic to trap enemies and prevent them from entering in large numbers simultaneously.

Within the fortress complex, there are remnants of structures believed to be observation posts and cannon platforms. The fortress's position on a hill provides a 360-degree view of the Wawonii Strait waters, allowing guards to detect foreign ships miles before they reached the shore.

Historical Significance and Important Events

Benteng Kontu played a vital role in the history of relations between the Wawonii region and the Sultanate of Buton. Historically, Wawonii was part of the sphere of influence (kadie) of the Sultanate of Buton. This fortress served as an outer defense for the center of power in Buton, as well as a local administrative center for Wawonii nobles.

One of the major events associated with this fortress is the people's resistance against Dutch trade monopolies. When the VOC attempted to control the agricultural produce from Wawonii Island, local fighters used Benteng Kontu as a guerrilla base. The fortress's structure, integrated with the tropical forest, made it difficult for colonial troops, who were more accustomed to open terrain, to penetrate.

In addition to its military function, Benteng Kontu also served as a refuge for the population during internal conflicts between local kingdoms on mainland Sulawesi. Behind its stone walls, the cultural identity of Wawonii was preserved, making it a symbol of unity for the sub-ethnic groups inhabiting the island.

The history of Benteng Kontu cannot be separated from the role of the Lakina Wawonii (local leaders equivalent to regional heads under the Sultanate of Buton). These Lakina mobilized the people to build and maintain the fortress through mutual cooperation as a form of obligation to their homeland.

Some oral accounts mention that the fortress was frequently visited by envoys from the Sultanate of Buton to ensure defense readiness in the northern region. The coordination between the sultanate's center in Baubau and the defense in Kontu indicates a highly advanced maritime defense bureaucracy of its time.

Cultural and Religious Meaning

For the people of Konawe Kepulauan today, Benteng Kontu is more than just an archaeological site. This place holds a strong spiritual dimension. Often, the fortress area is considered a sacred place (pemali) because it is believed to be guarded by the spirits of ancestors who fell defending the island.

Certain traditional ceremonies are sometimes still performed around this site, especially during important regional moments. This fortress serves as a reminder of the Wawonii people's identity as brave individuals and guardians of maritime sovereignty. The existence of this fortress strengthens the narrative that the people of Wawonii Islands have a civilization history equal to that of other great kingdoms in the archipelago.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

As a historical site included in the data of the Cultural Preservation Center (BPK), Benteng Kontu faces serious preservation challenges. Natural factors such as the growth of wild vegetation and large tree roots infiltrating the gaps between stone arrangements are the main threats to the integrity of the fortress walls.

The Konawe Kepulauan Regency government has begun to pay more attention to this site since the region's expansion. Efforts to clean the area and build access roads to the location are ongoing to facilitate historical research and development as a historical tourism destination (religious and educational tourism). However, the challenge of minimal written documentation from the past requires archaeologists and historians to conduct more in-depth research to uncover details still buried beneath the fortress grounds.

Conclusion and Future Hopes

Benteng Kontu is a monument of resilience standing tall in the heart of Wawonii Island. It is proof that in the past, the people of Konawe Kepulauan possessed strategic thinking in defense and architecture. Protecting Benteng Kontu means protecting the collective memory of the nation, especially the people of Southeast Sulawesi.

In the future, it is hoped that Benteng Kontu can be designated as a National Cultural Heritage. With such a status, funding and expert support for restoration will be more assured. As a noble heritage, Benteng Kontu is expected not only to be a silent pile of stones but to become a living laboratory for the younger generation to learn the values of courage, hard work, and love for their homeland inherited from the Wawonii ancestors.
