History of Kuningan Regency: Traces of Civilization at the Foot of Mount Ciremai

Kuningan Regency, a landlocked area of 1,197.95 km² located in eastern West Java, holds a deep historical narrative. As a non-coastal region bordering six other areas (Cirebon, Majalengka, Ciamis, Cilacap, Brebes, and Cirebon City), Kuningan has been a crossroads of culture and politics from prehistoric times to the modern era.

##

Origins and Royal Era

The historical roots of Kuningan can be traced back to the megalithic era, evidenced by the discovery of ancient sites in Cipari. Etymologically, the name "Kuningan" is closely related to "Kuning," which in local tradition refers to the metal brass or a golden color symbolizing glory.

In the 15th century, Kuningan was part of the Pajajaran Kingdom before eventually coming under Islamic influence. This transformation was pioneered by a key figure, Syarif Hidayatullah (Sunan Gunung Jati). On September 1, 1498, he appointed his son, Arya Kamuning, as the Regent of Kuningan. This appointment date is still commemorated as the Anniversary of Kuningan Regency. The existence of "Si Windu," Arya Kamuning's legendary war horse, became a symbol of local heroism and strength that is still immortalized in the regional emblem.

##

Colonial Era and Independence Struggle

During the Dutch colonial period, Kuningan held a strategic position as a fertile highland area. However, Kuningan's golden historical chapter on a national scale occurred after the proclamation of independence. From November 11-15, 1946, a village on the slopes of Mount Ciremai named Linggarjati was chosen as the location for diplomatic negotiations between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

The Linggarjati Negotiation Building stands as a silent witness where great figures like Sutan Sjahrir (Indonesia) and Schermerhorn (Netherlands) met to formulate the recognition of Indonesia's sovereignty. This event placed Kuningan on the map of international diplomacy, affirming its role in the struggle to maintain independence through negotiation.

##

Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions

Kuningan is rich in specific cultural heritage. One of the most unique is the Saptonan tradition, an equestrian and archery skill demonstration symbolizing the sportsmanship and heroism of an agrarian society. Additionally, the Seren Taun traditional ceremony in Cigugur is an expression of gratitude for abundant harvests, reflecting the harmony between humans, nature, and the Creator. The presence of the Paseban community in Cigugur also indicates the religious diversity and strong tolerance that has been rooted in Kuningan since ancient times.

Modern Development

Currently, Kuningan is transforming into an agropolitan and nature-based tourism center in West Java. With a topography dominated by the slopes of Mount Ciremai, the local government focuses on environmental preservation through the vision of "Conservation Regency." Historical sites like Balong Keramat Cigugur and colonial relics in the city center are integrated with modern economic development without abandoning its identity as a religious region that upholds the noble values of its ancestors, "Kuningan Asri."
