About
Characteristics of Nature and Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem
Abadi Pool is not just an ordinary swimming pool, but part of the Bahari River, whose headwaters are in the mountains surrounding Gunung Leuser National Park. The most prominent natural feature is its crystal-clear, turquoise-blue water. It is so clear that the riverbed, composed of white sand and small pebbles, is clearly visible from the surface, even at depths of up to 3 meters.
The ecosystem around the site is dominated by a pristine lowland tropical rainforest. The canopy of large trees like meranti and various types of forest fern vegetation creates a cool and humid microclimate. The roots of large trees extend to the riverbanks, acting as natural erosion control and giving the scenery an ancient feel. The air here is rich in oxygen, far from urban pollution, providing an instant relaxing effect for anyone who visits.
Adventure Experience: Body Rafting and Jungle Trekking
Unlike tourist attractions directly accessible from parking lots, reaching Abadi Pool requires a bit of enjoyable physical effort. Visitors must undertake a jungle trek for approximately 15 to 20 minutes through the forest and down a rather steep dirt path. During the journey, the chirping of forest birds and insects like cicadas will be your natural soundtrack.
The main activity that draws tourists is body rafting, or letting yourself drift with the river current. Visitors will be guided by local guides (Rangers) to navigate the river from Abadi Pool to Teroh-Teroh Waterfall. The sensation of floating on the cool, clear water while gazing at the sky through the dense canopy of trees is an unforgettable experience.
After about 30 minutes of river trekking, you will arrive at Teroh-Teroh Waterfall. Although not very high—about 12 meters—this waterfall has a stable water flow and a safe plunge pool for swimming. The cliff walls around the waterfall are covered in thick green moss, creating a color gradient that contrasts with the white foam of the water.
Preserved Biodiversity
This area is home to various local fauna. If you are lucky, visitors can see various species of colorful forest butterflies often perching on river rocks. The aquatic ecosystem is also well-preserved, inhabited by agile small river fish. The presence of moss and aquatic plants around the cliffs indicates that the water pollution level in this area is still very low, as these plants are highly sensitive to changes in environmental quality.
Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations
To get the clearest, perfect blue water visuals, the best time to visit is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, low rainfall ensures the river flow remains calm and not clouded by soil sediment from upstream.
If you visit during the rainy season, the water flow will increase significantly, and the water color tends to turn slightly brownish due to carried sediment material. Additionally, the trekking path will become more slippery and challenging. It is highly recommended to start your journey in the morning around 09:00 AM to enjoy the sunlight filtering through the tree canopy and reflecting on the water surface, creating a dramatic light effect at the bottom of the pool.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As part of preservation efforts, the management of Abadi Pool is carried out voluntarily by the local community, organized into a tour guide group. There are strict rules regarding the use of soap or shampoo in the water to maintain the pH balance and clarity of the river water. Visitors are also strictly prohibited from littering, no matter how small, in the forest or river areas.
The "Mandatory Guide" system implemented not only serves as a pathfinder but also as an environmental supervisor. The guides ensure that the number of tourists entering does not exceed the environment's carrying capacity, preventing the ecosystem from degrading due to excessive human activity.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Abadi Pool is located approximately 50 kilometers from Medan City, with a travel time of about 2 to 2.5 hours by land. The transportation route to Rumah Galuh Village is quite good and can be traversed by two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
The facilities at the starting point (data collection post) are quite adequate, including:
- Parking Area: Spacious and managed by local residents.
- Guide Basecamp: Registration area and rental for safety equipment such as life jackets.
- Restrooms and Changing Rooms: Available in the residential area before entering the forest path.
- Traditional Stalls: Offering snacks and drinks for tourists after their activities.
It is important to note that there are no permanent facilities such as toilets or shops within the forest and river areas, to maintain the natural authenticity. Therefore, visitors are advised to prepare personal gear, especially non-slip footwear (outdoor sandals or water shoes) to facilitate movement on wet and rocky terrain.
Abadi Pool and Teroh-Teroh Waterfall are tangible proof of North Sumatra's pure natural wealth. This destination offers more than just a photo spot; it provides a deep sensory experience through the coolness of mountain water, the freshness of forest air, and the tranquility that can only be found in the heart of the wild. Preserving its sustainability is a shared responsibility so that this crystal water wonder can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
