Exploring the Green Charm of Cikuya Tea Plantation: A Hidden Gem in Lebak, Banten

Lebak Regency might be more known for the cultural tourism of the Baduy tribe or the exotic Sawarna Beach. However, far in the southern highlands, lies a green oasis offering incredible coolness amidst Banten's scorching weather. This is Cikuya Tea Plantation, a natural tourism destination located in Hegarmanah Village, Cibeber District, Lebak Regency. Offering a panorama of hills blanketed by neat tea plantations, this place is proof that Banten possesses mountain ecosystem riches no less captivating than Puncak Bogor or Ciwidey Bandung.

Characteristics of the Landscape and Geographical Formation

Cikuya Tea Plantation stands on approximately 30 hectares of land at an altitude of about 700 to 1,000 meters above sea level (mdpl). Geographically, the plantation is situated in a hilly area, part of the buffer zone of Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (TNGHS). Its undulating topography creates a visually pleasing gradation of green, from the light green of tea shoots to the dark green of the tropical rainforest that borders the area.

Unlike tea plantations in other regions that tend to be flat, Cikuya has a steep and naturally terraced contour. This formation creates a very photogenic "green terracing" visual effect. The air here is very clean with an average temperature ranging between 18 to 24 degrees Celsius, providing a refreshing contrast for tourists coming from the hot coastal or urban areas of Banten.

Uniqueness of the Ecosystem and Organic Tea Quality

One of the main attractions that distinguishes Cikuya Tea Plantation from similar destinations is the type of tea plant cultivated. This plantation is managed by PT Harendong Green Farm, which focuses on planting Camellia sinensis var. sinensis. This variety is known for producing high-quality tea, often referred to as premium oolong and green tea.

The ecosystem at Cikuya Tea Plantation is managed with organic principles. Visitors will not find any pungent chemical pesticides, thus preserving local biodiversity. Among the tea bushes, various types of endemic mountain birds and pollinating insects are often seen coexisting with the plants. The soil in the Cibeber area is rich in volcanic minerals, which give a unique flavor characteristic to the resulting tea leaves—a blend of natural sweetness and a distinctive floral aroma, which has even won international awards at world tea competitions.

Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities

Visiting Cikuya Tea Plantation is not just about seeing the scenery, but a complete sensory experience. Here are some activities visitors can enjoy:

1. Tea Walking on Winding Paths: Visitors can stroll along the paths amidst the rows of tea plants. These paths are designed to follow the contours of the hills, offering a light physical challenge while enjoying the oxygen-rich mountain air.

2. Tea Processing Education: Tourists have the opportunity to witness the tea leaf picking process by local residents (tea pickers) and, in certain sessions, can learn how these leaves are processed organically at the factory located in the area.

3. Nature Photography: With a backdrop of layered hills and the thin mist that often descends in the morning, Cikuya is a paradise for photographers. Viewpoints at the top of the hills offer a 360-degree panorama encompassing the plantation expanse to the protected forest boundary.

4. Tea Tasting: It's incomplete without tasting the local produce directly from the source. Cafes or open areas are available where visitors can enjoy a warm cup of tea while gazing at the green valley below.

Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations

To get the best experience, it is recommended to visit Cikuya Tea Plantation in the morning, between 06:00 and 09:00 WIB. During this time, the sunlight is still soft, and often a thin mist still shrouds the tea shoots, creating a calming, mystical atmosphere.

During the dry season (May - September), road access is generally safer, and the sky is usually very clear, allowing visitors to see the horizon clearly. However, during the rainy season, although access might be slightly more challenging due to thick fog, the green color of the tea plantation will appear much richer and fresher. The aroma of wet earth (petrichor) mixed with the scent of tea leaves provides an extraordinary sense of relaxation.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

As an area directly bordering Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, Cikuya Tea Plantation plays an important role in environmental conservation in Lebak. The organic farming practices implemented serve to protect the surrounding river basins (DAS), prevent soil erosion, and maintain the quality of groundwater flowing to the villages below.

The management strongly emphasizes the importance of cleanliness. Tourists are strictly prohibited from littering or damaging the tea bushes while taking selfies. The existence of this tea plantation also serves as a green barrier preventing further forest encroachment, while providing sustainable livelihoods for the local community of Cibeber without harming nature.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Although its location is quite hidden, access to Cikuya Tea Plantation is continuously being improved by the local government. The journey to the location can be made from the center of Rangkasbitung with a travel time of approximately 3-4 hours via the Cipanas - Lebak Gedong - Citorek route until reaching Cibeber. The journey itself is part of the adventure, as it passes through hilly areas with steep yet beautiful valley views.

The facilities available in the tourist area are quite adequate for visitor comfort, including:

  • Parking Area: Sufficient parking space is available for two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles.
  • Musala and Toilets: Clean sanitation facilities and prayer rooms are maintained.
  • Local Stalls: There is a row of stalls serving typical rural food and, of course, authentic Cikuya tea.
  • Accommodation: For tourists who wish to enjoy the mountain night atmosphere, there are several homestays owned by local residents around Hegarmanah Village that offer typical Banten hospitality.

Cikuya Tea Plantation is a destination that offers harmony between agricultural productivity and nature conservation. For anyone seeking tranquility behind the hustle and bustle of the industrial province of Banten, Cikuya is the perfect escape, offering eternal freshness from the highlands of Lebak.
