Architecturally, Manakarra Beach embraces the Urban Waterfront concept, harmoniously integrating land and water elements. The main design centers on open space, allowing for maximum air circulation, a smart response to West Sulawesi's humid tropical climate.

The focal point of Manakarra Beach's aesthetics lies in the Nusantara Peace Gong Landmark and a series of giant pillars framing the main square. Its architectural style can be categorized as Modern-Symbolism, where strong geometric forms are used to convey cultural messages. The dominant materials include reinforced concrete, stainless steel, and local natural stone, creating a contrasting texture between the robustness of human structures and the softness of the sea landscape in the background.

Iconic Landmarks: Peace Gong and Pillars of Identity

One of the most prominent structural elements is the placement of the Nusantara Peace Gong. Technically, the support structure for the gong is designed with high precision to withstand the heavy metal load while resisting high seawater corrosion. The protective roof design for the gong uses simplified vernacular architectural elements, reflecting the roof of a traditional Mandar house but with more minimalist lines.

On the other hand, there is a series of tall pillars often referred to as the "Manakarra Gate." These pillars have a dual function: structurally, they support the area's lighting system, and aesthetically, they serve as visual boundaries that create a linear perspective towards the horizon. At night, the integration of LED lighting technology along these structures transforms the beach into a light art installation that reflects on the sea surface, creating a dynamic visual experience.

Historical Context and Development

The development of Manakarra Beach is inseparable from the establishment of West Sulawesi Province in 2004. This area was designed as a pilot project to showcase the independence of this new province. Before the extensive revitalization, this area was merely an ordinary coastline with small-scale fishing activities.

The local government collaborated with local architects and urban planners to create a "living room" for Mamuju City. Construction was carried out in stages, starting from limited reclamation to expand public areas to the construction of anjungan or wide concrete platforms extending into the sea. The structure of these platforms is designed with a deep pile foundation system to anticipate the characteristics of soft coastal soil and potential seismic shocks, given that the West Sulawesi region is located on an active fault line.

Cultural and Social Significance

Manakarra Beach functions as a "Social Amphitheater" for the people of Mamuju. In Mandar culture, the sea is the lifeline. The beach's architecture is intentionally designed without massive barriers to emphasize the principle of inclusivity. Anyone, from all social strata, can access this space.

Symbolically, the name "Manakarra" itself has strong cultural roots, often associated with the meaning of "heirloom" or something with spiritual power. Therefore, decorative elements around the area, such as reliefs and floor patterns, often incorporate the Sekomandi motif (traditional Kalumpang ikat weaving), which is an ancient visual identity of West Sulawesi. The integration of traditional motifs into modern concrete structures is a form of dialogue between the past and the future.

Structural Innovation and Environmental Adaptation

One of the biggest challenges in Manakarra Beach's architecture is its resistance to saline environments (high salt content). Innovations were made in selecting high-durability concrete mixes and protective coatings for metal structures to prevent premature oxidation.

Furthermore, the drainage system in the platform area is designed with specific slopes to ensure rainwater is directly discharged into the sea without flooding public areas. The vegetation arrangement around the buildings also includes types of golden ketapang trees and palms that are capable of breaking the speed of sea winds before they reach densely populated areas, creating a cooler microclimate amidst Mamuju's hot weather.

Visitor Experience and Current Function

Currently, Manakarra Beach serves as the gravitational center for creative economy and tourism. Its architecture provides space for various activities, from an open stage for art performances, organized culinary areas, to wide jogging tracks.

Visitors standing in the middle of the platform will experience a "panoramic" effect. On one side, they are treated to the grandeur of modern building structures and the view of Mamuju's green hills, while on the other side, there is the expanse of Makassar Strait with Karampuang Island clearly visible in the distance. This uniqueness makes Manakarra Beach one of the best waterfronts in Eastern Indonesia, where the boundary between man-made architecture and natural beauty becomes very thin.
