Exploring the Charm of Mount Inerie: The Towering Natural Pyramid in the Heart of Ngada
Ngada Regency in East Nusa Tenggara holds one of the most stunning geological treasures in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Standing proudly at 2,245 meters above sea level, Mount Inerie is not just a volcano; it is a visual icon that dominates the skyline of Bajawa City. Known by climbers as the "Natural Pyramid," Mount Inerie offers a blend of challenging volcanic terrain, local spirituality, and unparalleled savanna panoramas.

Geological Uniqueness and Symmetrical Landscape
The main characteristic that distinguishes Inerie from other mountains in Indonesia is its almost perfect conical shape. From a distance, the mountain resembles a large pyramid whose surface is covered by green vegetation and volcanic gravel paths. Geologically, Inerie is a still-active stratovolcano, although its activity tends to be calm.
Its unique landscape lies in the contrast between its northern and southern sides. On the lower slopes, visitors are greeted by a humid mountain forest, while as you ascend, the vegetation begins to thin, leaving behind challenging fields of loose rocks (scoria) and gravel. At the summit, there is a small, not very deep crater that offers a 360-degree view of the entire Flores island.

Ecosystem and Biodiversity of the Ngada Mountains
Mount Inerie is part of a mountain ecosystem that serves as a habitat for endemic flora and fauna of Nusa Tenggara. On the lower slopes, ampupu trees (Eucalyptus urophylla) grow abundantly, giving off the distinctive fresh scent of the mountain forest. This area is also an important region for endemic birds of Flores, such as the Flores Crow and various species of sunbirds, whose chirping is often heard in the morning.
The fertile volcanic soil around the base of the mountain also supports the existence of internationally renowned arabica coffee plantations, namely Bajawa Coffee. This ecosystem is preserved thanks to the local wisdom of the Ngada people, who view Mount Inerie as a sacred entity. The name "Inerie" itself comes from the words "Ine" meaning mother and "Rie" meaning beautiful, reflecting the residents' reverence for this mountain as a maternal figure who provides protection and prosperity.

Climbing Experience and Outdoor Activities
For adventure lovers, climbing Inerie is a must-do activity. However, do not be fooled by its "mere" 2,245 meters above sea level. Inerie's climbing route is known to be very technical and exhausting due to its dominance of unstable sand and gravel paths (scree).
1. "Summit Attack" Climb: The climb usually starts from Kampung Watulume at 02:00 or 03:00 in the early morning. This is done to catch the sunrise moment at the summit and avoid the scorching sun on the open trail.
2. "Sand Skiing" Sensation: During the descent, climbers will experience the unique sensation of sliding down the volcanic sand, which speeds up the travel time but requires extra balance.
3. Landscape Photography: From certain points on the mountain slopes, photographers can capture images of the traditional Bena Village, which looks like a boat from above, with the crater and green valley as a backdrop.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to explore Mount Inerie is during the dry season, which is between May and September. During this period, rainfall is very low, so the climbing trails, consisting of soil and sand, are not slippery and are more stable. Furthermore, the clear skies in the dry season guarantee unobstructed views towards the Savu Sea to the south and Mount Ebulobo to the east.
Conversely, visiting Inerie during the rainy season (December - March) is highly not recommended for beginner climbers. Thick fog often covers the trails, and the risk of small rockfalls in the summit area increases significantly when exposed to rainwater.

Conservation and Environmental Protection Efforts
As part of the watershed for Ngada Regency, the preservation of the forest at the foot of Mount Inerie is crucial. The local government, along with local traditional leaders, continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining native vegetation to prevent erosion and maintain the flow of springs that supply water to the settlements below.
Climbers are required to adhere to the Leave No Trace principle. Given its status as a revered mountain, visitors are also asked to respect customary norms, such as not speaking rudely and maintaining proper behavior while on the climbing trail. Waste management is a primary focus, with every climber expected to bring their trash back to Bajawa city.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Mount Inerie is located about 15 kilometers from the center of Bajawa City. The journey to the starting point of the climb can be completed in 30-40 minutes using two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. The road access is quite good with adequate asphalt leading to the villages at the foot of the mountain.
Although there are no luxury facilities on the climbing trail, some basic facilities are available at the foot of the mountain:
- Local Guides: It is highly recommended to hire local guides from Kampung Watulume or through tour operators in Bajawa, as the climbing routes often change due to shifting sands.
- Accommodation: Tourists usually stay in homestays or hotels in Bajawa City, which offer cool mountain air.
- Local Warungs: At the starting point of the climb, there are small local stalls that provide mineral water and snacks.
Mount Inerie is a perfect manifestation of nature's power and cultural beauty in East Nusa Tenggara. With its iconic shape and the physical challenges it offers, this destination promises a profound spiritual and physical experience for anyone brave enough to tread its summit. Preserving Inerie means preserving the breath of life for the Ngada community and Indonesia's natural heritage for the future.
