Origins and Founding: The Fau Clan Narrative
The history of Orahili Fau is inseparable from the great migrations of tribes in South Nias. The village was founded by ancestors from the Fau clan (mado). The name "Orahili" itself refers to a settlement located on a hill, a traditional Nias defense strategy to monitor enemy movements from afar. Based on oral tradition (Hoho), the founding of this village is closely related to the relocation of the population from older, lower-lying settlements to a more strategic and sacred location.
Orahili Fau is the "mother village" or origin village for many other settlements in its vicinity. History records that this village suffered severe destruction during the Dutch colonial period. In the mid-19th century, specifically around the 1840s to 1860s, Orahili Fau became a center of resistance against Dutch military expeditions. As a result of fierce resistance, the village was burned down by colonial troops but was later rebuilt with a more magnificent structure, demonstrating the resilience of its people.
Megalithic Architecture and Village Layout

When the Dutch attempted to establish their power and abolish slavery and traditional rituals deemed barbaric, Orahili warriors engaged in guerrilla resistance. Although Dutch weaponry was superior, Orahili's hilly topography and the village's defense system with narrow stone gates made the colonial forces struggle for years.

The Fau clan, which led this village, produced many respected traditional leaders (Siulu). The Siulu in Orahili Fau were known as skilled diplomats who were able to maintain peace between villages in South Nias through the customary law of Fondrakö—a sacred consensus that regulated all aspects of Nias society, from criminal law to marriage customs. The influence of the Fau clan from Orahili even reached the coastal areas, making it one of the most influential dynasties in Nias history.

For the local community, Orahili Fau is a sacred place. Before the arrival of Christianity in Nias, this village was a center for ancestor spirit worship (Adat Mebali Naduya). Every architectural element, from animal carvings on wooden beams to the position of megalithic stones, has symbolic meaning connecting the human world with the spirit world.
Although the majority of the population has now embraced Christianity, noble cultural values are still maintained. The Fahombo (Stone Jumping) ceremony and war dances are still frequently practiced in the village square as a form of preserving identity. As a highly valuable Historical Site, Orahili Fau is now protected by cultural heritage laws. The main challenges faced are the weathering of wood on centuries-old traditional houses and ground shifts that can damage the arrangement of megalithic stones.
The South Nias Regency Government, along with the Ministry of Education and Culture, has undertaken several stages of restoration, particularly in repairing the thatched roofs of traditional houses and arranging the surrounding environment. Furthermore, Orahili Fau is being promoted as part of UNESCO World Heritage (along with other South Nias sites) because it reflects "Outstanding Universal Value" in the category of traditional human settlements. The awareness of village youth in documenting oral history from the elders is also key to maintaining the continuity of Orahili Fau's historical narrative so it is not lost to time.
