About

Historical Origins and Period of Establishment

Historically, the existence of Rumah Bolon or Bagas Godang in the Padangsidimpuan area is closely related to the traditional Mandailing governance structure led by a Raja Panusunan Bulung. The construction of this traditional house usually marked the establishment of a Banua or a small city-state settlement within the Mandailing tradition.

Although it is difficult to pinpoint a single exact date for all similar buildings in this region, the existence of Bolon Mandailing in Padangsidimpuan reached its peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During that period, Padangsidimpuan served as an important administrative center for the Dutch East Indies colonial government, as well as a meeting point for traditional kings from the Mandailing Julu, Mandailing Godang, and Angkola regions. This site was not only built as a residence but as a "Palace of Justice" where customary law was enforced and strategic decisions for war and peace were formulated.

Architecture and Construction Details: Philosophy in Wood

The architecture of Bolon Mandailing has characteristics that sharply distinguish it from Rumah Bolon Toba or Rumah Gadang Minangkabau. Its construction is dominated by the use of high-quality hardwood, such as ulin wood or local teak, which are joined without the use of iron nails, relying instead on wooden peg techniques and ijuk (palm fiber) rope bindings.

One of the most striking features is its roof shape called Atap Pedati. Unlike the sharply pointed buffalo horns on other traditional houses, the roof of Bolon Mandailing tends to have a trapezoidal shape with softer yet majestic lines. At the front of the building, there is a Bondul ornament that symbolizes the boundary between the outside world and the family's honor within the house.

The ornamental details or Gorgi on the wooden walls of Bolon Mandailing are not merely decorations. Each carving has a philosophical meaning:

1. Gajah Dompak: Symbolizes strength and protection against evil.

2. Simeol-meol: A vine carving that symbolizes the dynamism of life and the economic growth of the community.

3. Mataniari (Sun): Placed at the top as a symbol of the source of life and spiritual enlightenment.

The building's floor is intentionally raised (stilt house) to avoid attacks from wild animals and floods, while also creating a space underneath (kolong) traditionally used for storing agricultural tools or livestock.

Historical Significance and Important Events

Bolon Mandailing in Padangsidimpuan holds extraordinary significance in the context of resistance against colonialism. During the Paderi War (1821-1837), this region became a buffer zone between the influence of the Paderi movement from the south and local defenses. Bagas Godang often served as a gathering place for traditional leaders to discuss strategies for defending the region from Dutch military expansion after the Paderi War.

Furthermore, this site witnessed the transition of power from a traditional royal system to a modern bureaucratic system. It was on the terraces of this house that the Raja Panusunan received foreign guests, ranging from European explorers to Dutch Assistant-Resident officials, in an effort to maintain traditional sovereignty amidst the pressures of colonial politics.

Important Figures and Dynastic Connections

The history of Bolon Mandailing in Padangsidimpuan cannot be separated from the role of dominant clans such as Nasution and Lubis. Leaders from these clans, who held the title of Sutan or Raja, were the social architects who ensured Bolon Mandailing remained the cultural gravitational center.

Great names like Sutan Pane Paruhum or figures from local leadership dynasties in the region are recorded to have resided or led major traditional rituals at this site. Kinship ties built through inter-royal marriage systems in Mandailing were often formalized through Horja Godang ceremonies centered in the spacious courtyard (bolon courtyard) in front of this traditional house.

Cultural and Religious Functions

For the Mandailing people, Bolon Mandailing is a culturally sacred building. It is here that traditional title conferment ceremonies and grand deliberations called Sopo Godang are held. Religiously, before the massive arrival of Islam, this house was considered to have a connection with ancestral spirits. However, after Islam became the main pillar of Mandailing society, the function of this house shifted to a place for teaching Islamic ethical values that were acculturated with tradition (Adat na mardasorkon syarak, syarak na mardasorkon Kitabullah).

The sacred rhythm of Gordang Sambilan (nine large drums) music could only be played on specific occasions within the Bagas Godang environment, signifying that this site is the holder of the highest authority in the local cultural sound and movement order.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Currently, the condition of Bolon Mandailing in Padangsidimpuan faces serious challenges due to age and the tropical climate. Most of the original structures have experienced weathering on their pillars and ijuk roofs. However, collective awareness from the indigenous community and local government is increasing.

Several restoration efforts have been made while maintaining the authenticity of the materials. The Padangsidimpuan City Government has designated several Bagas Godang areas as protected cultural heritage sites. Nevertheless, the biggest challenge remains funding for the conservation of old wood, which requires special treatment to prevent termite damage or decomposition. Restoration is not just about the physical aspect but also about reviving the social function of the house so that it is not merely a dead museum, but a living public space for the younger generation of Mandailing to learn about their identity.

Unique Fact: Local Wisdom Regarding Earthquakes

One of the unique facts about Bolon Mandailing is its earthquake resistance. Considering that the North Sumatra region is located on the Semangko fault line, Mandailing ancestors designed the stilt house construction with a flexible "joint" system. When an earthquake occurs, the building will sway with the rhythm of the tremors without breaking, due to the non-rigid wooden joints. This proves that Bolon Mandailing is the pinnacle of traditional science that combines aesthetics with a deep understanding of nature.

With all the grandeur and historical value it holds, Bolon Mandailing in Padangsidimpuan stands as a symbol of resilience. It is not just a relic of the past, but a moral compass for the Angkola and Mandailing people in moving towards the future, reminding them that no matter how far they go, the roots of their culture in their ancestral land will never waver.
