History of Pagar Alam: The Gem of South Sumatra's Highlands

Pagar Alam, located in the western part of South Sumatra Province, is a region of 633.54 km² geographically surrounded by the Bukit Barisan mountain range. The name "Pagar Alam" itself literally means "fenced by nature," referring to its topography enclosed by Mount Dempo and green hills. The city directly borders Lahat Regency, Empat Lawang Regency, Muara Enim Regency, and Bengkulu Province (Kaur Regency and South Bengkulu Regency).

Traces of the Megalithic Era and Cultural Roots

The history of Pagar Alam dates back long before colonial records existed. This region was a highly significant center of the Pasemah Megalithic civilization in Southeast Asia. Scattered across these highlands are hundreds of ancient sites in the form of dolmens, menhirs, and stone statues of humans riding elephants. The indigenous Pasemah (Besemah) people have a social order called "Lampik Empat Merdike Due," a democratic and independent traditional governance system from ancient times. The oral tradition of "Guritan" serves as a medium for preserving history, narrating the heroism of their ancestors.

Colonial Era and People's Resistance

During the Dutch occupation, Pagar Alam became part of the Onderafdeeling Pasemah Landen under the Palembang Residency. Due to its fertile soil, the Dutch designated this area as a center for coffee and tea plantations. In 1929, the Dutch established a tea processing factory on the slopes of Mount Dempo, which is still operational today. However, the colonial presence was not accepted passively. Local figures like Puyang Kedum and Besemah warriors fiercely resisted the forced cultivation system and taxes imposed by the Dutch East Indies government, triggering various tensions in the interior of South Sumatra.

Independence Era and Military Aggression

Following the proclamation of independence on August 17, 1945, Pagar Alam played a crucial role as a base for guerrilla defense. During the Second Dutch Military Aggression (1948-1949), this region served as a refuge for the emergency government and a headquarters for fighters from the Southern Front. Its isolated location in the highlands made it difficult for Dutch forces to penetrate. Local fighters collaborated with the People's Security Army (TKR) to repel enemy movements attempting to advance from the direction of Lahat.

Modern Development and Autonomy

Administratively, Pagar Alam was initially a status of an Administrative City under Lahat Regency. A new chapter in its history began on June 21, 2001, when based on Law No. 8 of 2001, Pagar Alam was officially established as an independent Autonomous City. The first Mayor, Drs. H. Djazuli Kuris, laid the foundation for development focused on agro-tourism and environmental conservation.

Today, Pagar Alam has developed into a unique historical and natural tourist destination in Indonesia. Besides the nationally recognized Tegur Wangi Megalithic Site, monuments of struggle like Tugu Rimau stand as symbols of the people's resistance. The city continues to maintain its cultural identity amidst modernization, making it a living testament to the continuity of civilization from the Stone Age to the digital era in the heart of Sumatra.
