History of Probolinggo: From the Majapahit Era to a Modern Port City

Probolinggo, a strategic region on the north coast of East Java with an area of 1731.58 km², has deep historical roots dating back to the Nusantara kingdom era. The name "Probolinggo" originates from the Sanskrit word, Prabu meaning king or leader, and Lingga symbolizing fertility or a sign. Philosophically, this name refers to the event of a celestial object (meteor) falling, which was considered a sign of blessing for a leader.

##

Pre-Colonial Era and the Majapahit Kingdom

Historical traces of Probolinggo are recorded in the Nagarakretagama by Mpu Prapanca. During the reign of King Hayam Wuruk of Majapahit (14th century), this region was known as "Banger". Banger was a river that served as a center for settlements and trade. In 1359, Hayam Wuruk undertook a pilgrimage (tirtayatra) to the eastern region and stopped in Banger. Under Majapahit's rule, Banger functioned as a transit port connecting inter-island trade, given its position along the north coast of Java.

Colonial Period and People's Resistance

Entering the 18th century, the Banger region came under VOC control after an agreement with the Mataram Sultanate. On September 4, 1770, the Dutch Governor-General appointed Kyai Djojolelono as the first Regent of Banger. This date is subsequently commemorated as Probolinggo's anniversary. Kyai Djojolelono was known as a religious and patriotic figure; he later resigned his position because he was unwilling to fully submit to oppressive colonial policies.

During Daendels' administration (1808-1811), Probolinggo became an important part of the construction of the Grote Postweg (Great Post Road). Tanjung Tembaga Port was developed as an export point for plantation commodities such as sugar and tobacco. One of the legacies of this era is the Gereja Merah (GPIB Immanuel), built in 1862, which is one of only two churches in the world with a similar prefabricated metal structural system.

##

Independence Era and Physical Struggle

During the physical revolution (1945-1949), Probolinggo became a fierce battleground against Dutch military aggression. Local figures like Lieutenant Colonel Mochammad Sroedji led guerrilla warfare in the mountainous areas around Probolinggo. The monument of struggle standing in the city center serves as a reminder of the tenacity of the Probolinggo people in defending the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia from the attempts of the colonizers to return.

##

Cultural Heritage and Modern Development

Probolinggo has a unique demographic characteristic known as "Pendalungan" culture, a harmonious assimilation of Javanese and Madurese cultures. One of the historical traditions still preserved is the Kasada ritual performed by the Tenggerese people on the slopes of Mount Bromo. Although administratively divided into a City and a Regency, Probolinggo's identity as an agricultural center (producer of mangoes and grapes) and its fisheries sector remain dominant.

Geographically, Probolinggo is surrounded by eight regions/borders, strengthening its position as a major transportation hub in central East Java. Today, with modern infrastructure like the Trans-Java Toll Road, Probolinggo has transformed from a mere transit city into an international industrial and tourism center, without abandoning its historical identity as the land of kings.
