Seven Layer Fortress: Tuanku Tambusai's Monument of Struggle in Rokan Land
Benteng Tujuh Lapis, locally known as Benteng Aur Duri, is one of the most significant historical heritage sites in Riau Province, precisely located in Dalu-Dalu Village, Tambusai District, Rokan Hulu Regency. This site is not merely a pile of earth or remnants of ancient buildings, but a physical manifestation of ingenious military strategy and a symbol of the fierce resistance of the Riau people against Dutch colonialism in the 19th century.

Historiographical Origins and Founding Period
The construction of Benteng Tujuh Lapis is closely related to the dynamics of the Padri War, which spread from West Sumatra to the Rokan region. This fortress was established around the 1830s by Muhammad Saleh, who later became better known by the title Tuanku Tambusai. He was a scholar and military leader nicknamed "De Padrische Tijger" or the Padri Tiger of Rokan by the Dutch.
The establishment of this fortress aimed to create an impenetrable defense base as well as a center for the spread of Islam in the northern Sumatra region. The Dalu-Dalu location was chosen strategically because it was at the confluence of tributaries and vital land trade routes, making it the last fortress of the Padri forces after the fall of other fortresses in the Minangkabau region to the Dutch.

Unique Architecture and Construction Details
True to its name, the main characteristic of this site is its structure consisting of seven layers of earth mounds (ramparts) with varying heights between 3 to 7 meters. Between these layers of mounds, deep trenches were dug which, in their heyday, were filled with water and densely planted with thorny bamboo (Aur Duri).
This construction applied a highly effective layered defense principle. The trenches not only served as an obstacle to enemy advance but also as deadly traps. The use of thorny bamboo (Bambusa blumeana) was not without reason; this type of bamboo grows in very dense clumps and has hard thorns, making it a living fence that was difficult to penetrate even by cannonballs due to its elastic nature in absorbing impact. Inside the fortress, there were cannon platforms and residential areas capable of accommodating thousands of soldiers and adequate war logistics for a long siege.

Historical Significance and Important Events
Benteng Tujuh Lapis bears silent witness to one of the most grueling sieges in Dutch colonial history in Sumatra. For years, Dutch forces under the command of formidable officers like Colonel Michiels repeatedly attempted to conquer Dalu-Dalu, but always failed to breach the seven layers of defense.
The unique history of this fortress is its status as "a fortress that never surrendered." When this fortress finally fell into Dutch hands on December 28, 1838, it was not because its defenses were breached through direct combat, but through a total siege that cut off supply lines. Even when the fortress was occupied, Tuanku Tambusai managed to escape through an underground tunnel to Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, without ever being captured or surrendering to the Dutch until the end of his life.

Central Figure: Tuanku Tambusai
The name Benteng Tujuh Lapis cannot be separated from the figure of Tuanku Tambusai. He was not only a war commander but also a visionary military architect. He integrated local wisdom in the use of natural materials with advanced guerrilla tactics and static defense for his time. His leadership at this fortress succeeded in uniting various community factions in Rokan to stand under the same banner of struggle against foreign oppression. His success in defending this fortress for years made him one of the most respected Indonesian National Heroes in military history.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts
Currently, Benteng Tujuh Lapis has been designated as a National Cultural Heritage Site. Although some parts of the earth mounds have undergone natural erosion and trench silting due to weather factors, its seven-layer structure is still clearly identifiable. The Rokan Hulu Regency government, along with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Center, has undertaken various restoration efforts, including site area cleaning, the creation of pedestrian paths for tourists, and the installation of historical information boards.
Restoration is carried out very carefully to maintain the authenticity of the site. The replanting of thorny bamboo around the trenches is done to restore the original landscape of the fortress as it was in the 19th century. The site is now a major historical tourist destination in Riau that educates the younger generation about the importance of strategy and steadfast principles.

Cultural and Religious Importance
Besides its military value, Benteng Tujuh Lapis holds deep cultural and religious significance for the people of Rokan Hulu. This area is a symbol of past Islamic glory, where Sharia laws were applied and religious education flourished within the fortress. The local community views this site with great respect, often associating it with the heroic values of "Tuanku" who serve as role models in safeguarding the sovereignty of the homeland. Every year, this site becomes the center for national and regional commemoration events, reinforcing Rokan Hulu's identity as "Negeri Seribu Suluk" (Land of a Thousand Suluks).

Unique Historical Facts
One rarely known unique fact is that the drainage system within the fortress was designed in such a way that even during heavy rainfall, the defense area remained dry, while the trenches between the layers were completely filled to impede the enemy. Furthermore, there are legends about the existence of secret tunnels connecting the interior of the fortress directly to the riverbank, which were used for water supply and emergency evacuation routes.
Overall, Benteng Tujuh Lapis is tangible proof that limitations in modern weaponry technology at the time could be overcome by cleverly utilizing natural topography and local materials. This site stands as an eternal monument to the unyielding spirit of resistance from the land of Rokan Hulu against all forms of occupation.
