About
Origins and Construction Period
The construction of Speelwijk Fortress began in 1682, a crucial period for the Sultanate of Banten. The fortress was named "Speelwijk" in honor of Cornelis Janszoon Speelman, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1681–1684. Speelman played a significant role in expanding the influence of the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in various regions of the Indonesian archipelago.
The construction of this fortress was intertwined with the internal political drama of the Sultanate of Banten. Following the conflict between Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa and his son, Sultan Haji (Sultan Abu Nashar Abdul Qahar), the VOC succeeded in establishing its influence. In return for the military assistance provided to Sultan Haji to seize the throne, the VOC demanded the right to build a defensive fortress in a strategic location that was previously part of the defenses of Old Banten city. The architect behind this magnificent structure was Hendrick Lucaszoon Cardeel, a Dutchman who defected to the Sultanate's side and later rejoined the VOC.
Architecture and Construction Details
Architecturally, Speelwijk Fortress reflects the European defensive style of the 17th century, adapted with local materials. The fortress has an irregular quadrilateral plan with bastions at each corner. These bastions were designed to jut out, allowing guards to fire cannons in various directions without any blind spots.
The primary materials used were a combination of coral rock, bricks, and sea sand, bonded with a lime mixture. The use of coral rock provides a unique texture and high resistance to seawater corrosion, given its close proximity to the coastline at that time. The fortress walls are 1.5 to 2 meters thick and about 3 meters high. Within the fortress complex, there were once various complete military facilities, including a powder magazine, a commander's room, soldier barracks, a small church, and even underground cells that served as prison cells.
Historical Significance and Key Events
Speelwijk Fortress served as an instrument for the VOC's total control over the spice trade in the port of Banten, especially pepper. From its bastions, Dutch cannons were aimed at the sea to monitor ship traffic, and towards the land to intimidate the people of Banten who remained loyal to the spirit of resistance of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa.
One unique fact that distinguishes Speelwijk from other fortresses in Java is its function as a small administrative center outside Batavia. Here, the VOC carried out judicial functions and tax collection. The fortress also witnessed the signing of various treaties that gradually eroded the sovereignty of the Sultanate of Banten until the sultanate was formally abolished by Daendels in 1808.
Associated Figures and Periods
Besides Cornelis Speelman and Sultan Haji, Hendrick Lucaszoon Cardeel is the most controversial figure. He was awarded the title Pangeran Wiraguna by Sultan Haji for his services in building various infrastructure in Banten before ultimately designing the fortress that would imprison the sultanate's influence.
The golden age of Speelwijk Fortress lasted for approximately 130 years (1682-1810s). However, with the silting of the Banten port and the outbreak of malaria in the coastal areas, the fortress's function began to decline. The peak came when Governor-General Herman Willem Daendels ordered the destruction of most buildings in Old Banten to relocate the administrative center to a healthier area in Sirang (now Serang), and Speelwijk began to be abandoned.
Dutch Cemetery (Kerkhof)
One of the most important and still visible parts today is the Dutch cemetery area or Kerkhof located on the north side of the fortress. This cemetery contains large tombstones (mausoleums) with inscriptions in Old Dutch. High-ranking VOC officials, military commanders, and their family members are buried here. One of the famous graves is that of a military commander who died in a local conflict. The presence of these graves confirms that Speelwijk was not just a temporary military post, but a well-established colonial community in its time.
Conservation Status and Preservation Efforts
Currently, Speelwijk Fortress is managed by the Banten Cultural Heritage Preservation Center (BPCB). Although most of its main buildings have collapsed, leaving only foundations and walls, the structure of the bastions and underground rooms can still be clearly seen. Restoration efforts are carried out periodically, especially to strengthen the walls that have become fragile due to natural weathering and the growth of wild vegetation.
This site is now a major historical tourist destination in the Old Banten area. Visitors can climb the remains of the bastions to see the view towards the Java Sea, imagining the atmosphere of the Banten port, which was once one of the busiest ports in the world.
Cultural and Educational Value
For the people of Serang and Banten in general, Speelwijk Fortress is a reminder of the importance of safeguarding sovereignty. Culturally, this site offers lessons on past construction techniques and how political infiltration can bring down a great empire from within. The presence of this fortress alongside Islamic sites like the Great Mosque of Banten and the Avalokitesvara Vihara demonstrates Banten's very multicultural and complex historical layers.
In conclusion, Speelwijk Fortress is not just a pile of dead stones. It is a living narrative of ambition, betrayal, defense, and the changing times. The preservation of this site is crucial so that future generations can understand that the freedom enjoyed today is the result of a long historical process recorded within the sturdy walls of Speelwijk.
