Traces of Islamic Civilization in Tabalong Land: History and Grandeur of Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque

Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque stands not merely as a place of worship, but as a living monument that records the spiritual and cultural transition of the Dayak and Malay communities in South Kalimantan. Located in Banua Lawas Village, Banua Lawas District, Tabalong Regency, this mosque is one of the oldest historical sites that bears silent witness to the early spread of Islam in the northern region of South Kalimantan.

Historiographical Origins and Period of Establishment

Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque was recorded as being established in 1625 AD. This year places the mosque within a crucial historical timeline, namely during the golden age of the Banjar Sultanate. Based on oral traditions and local historical documents, the construction of this mosque was a joint initiative between visiting religious figures and local customary elders.

Before Islam massively entered this region, Banua Lawas was known as a settlement center for the Dayak Manyan tribe. The location where the mosque stands is said to be a former sacred site (pesanggrahan) used for customary ceremonies. The transformation of this site into a mosque marks a period of peaceful acculturation, where Islamic teachings began to be accepted by the inland communities through an inclusive cultural approach.

Architecture: Harmony of Tradition and Religious Symbolism

Architecturally, Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque exudes the distinctiveness of traditional Banjar buildings with a strong influence of the modified "Demak Mosque" style. The main structure is dominated by high-quality ulin wood (ironwood) which still stands strong today.

The most striking feature is the three-tiered roof (tajug) which symbolizes the spiritual levels in Islam: Iman, Islam, and Ihsan. At the apex of the roof is a memolo or mustaka with distinctive carvings. Another uniqueness lies in the main supporting pillars (soko guru). There are twelve ulin wood pillars symbolizing the number of months in a Hijriah year.

One of the most iconic artifacts within this mosque is the presence of the Original Gendang and the Yellow Cannon. The gendang is made from a large, solid piece of wood, while the yellow cannon located in the mosque courtyard is believed to be a relic from the colonial era with symbolic value as a protector of the area. In addition, there are ancient porcelain plates embedded in the mosque walls, a decorative practice common during the Banjar Sultanate to show prestige and international trade relations.

Historical Significance and Key Figures

From a historical perspective, this mosque served as a consolidation center for fighters against Dutch colonialism. During the Banjar War, the Banua Lawas region became a strategic zone for the followers of Prince Antasari. This mosque was often used as a secret meeting place to plan guerrilla strategies.

A significant figure closely associated with the history of this mosque is Khatib Dayan, a great scholar from the Demak Sultanate who was sent to convert the King of Banjar, Sultan Suriansyah. Although Khatib Dayan focused on the sultanate's center, his da'wah influence reached Banua Lawas through his students who later established this mosque as a base for spreading Islam in the upstream river region (Pahuluan).

Unique Facts: Tajau and Oaths of Loyalty

There is a unique historical fact not found in other mosques, which is the presence of two Tajau (large ceramic jars) estimated to be hundreds of years old. These tajau contain water that is often sought by pilgrims. Historically, these tajau were used by the Dayak Manyan people who had just converted to Islam as a place for ablution water, as well as a symbol of self-purification from the past.

Furthermore, Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque is known as the site for the implementation of "Customary Oaths." In the past, if there were disputes between residents or tribes that could not be resolved, they would take an oath in front of this mosque. Local beliefs strongly hold that anyone who lies while taking an oath at this place will suffer divine retribution or kualat. This shows how sacred this mosque's position is, transcending religious boundaries, but also touching upon the socio-legal customary order.

Preservation and Restoration Efforts

As a Cultural Heritage Site protected by law, Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque has undergone several renovations. Restorations have been carried out very carefully by the Cultural Preservation Center to ensure the authenticity of the ulin wood material is maintained. Although there have been additions to the veranda area and supporting facilities to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers and pilgrims, the core structure of the mosque remains preserved in its original 17th-century form.

The Tabalong Regency government has designated it as a leading religious tourism destination. Every Islamic holiday, especially during the Prophet's Birthday or Eid al-Fitr, the mosque is filled with thousands of people coming from various parts of Kalimantan, and even from outside the island, to absorb the historical and spiritual values emanating from this old building.

Conclusion and Cultural Value

Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque is a manifestation of the identity of the Tabalong people. It is not just a wooden building, but a bridge connecting the Dayak past, rich with ancestral traditions, to a civilized Islamic future. Its existence proves that ethnic and belief differences can merge into a harmonious whole through gentle da'wah that respects local wisdom.

To this day, Banua Lawas Heritage Mosque stands tall, emitting the distinctive aroma of ulin wood and an aura of deep tranquility. It remains a beacon of faith for the people of Banua Lawas and a symbol of the glorious history of Islamic civilization in South Kalimantan that must not be forgotten by future generations.
