About

Historical Origins and Founding Period

The historical roots of Balai Di Ujung Tanjung are closely intertwined with the early 17th century. According to local historical records and strong oral traditions, this site was founded concurrently with the coronation of the first Sultan of Asahan, Sultan Abdul Jalil (reigned approximately 1630–1650). Sultan Abdul Jalil himself was the son of Sultan Iskandar Muda, the great ruler of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate, born from his marriage to a princess of the King of Pinang Awan.

The name "Tanjungbalai" itself etymologically derives from the existence of a "Balai" (hall or meeting place) located on a "Tanjung" (land jutting into the river). This Balai at Ujung Tanjung became the precursor to the city's name. Initially, this building served as the center of government administration and a meeting place for royal dignitaries before a permanent palace was more grandly built in the surrounding area.

Architecture and Construction Details

Architecturally, Balai Di Ujung Tanjung reflects the Coastal Malay building style, adapted to the aquatic environment. The original building was a stilt structure (rumah panggung) using selected hardwoods, such as unglen wood or damar laut wood, which are resistant to high humidity and river overflow.

The main characteristic of this building is its pyramid-shaped roof with typical Asahan Malay carved ornaments on the eaves and ventilation. These carvings usually adopt floral motifs, such as bamboo shoots and mangosteen flowers, symbolizing fertility and humility. The stilt structure allows for good air circulation and protects its inhabitants from the threat of seasonal floods from the confluence of these two large rivers.

The area around the site was once a natural pier. Due to its location at the tip of the cape, the building has a 270-degree view of the waters, allowing it to function as a natural watchtower for any ship entering from the Strait of Malacca towards the interior of Asahan.

Historical Significance and Important Events

Balai Di Ujung Tanjung played a vital role in the geopolitics of North Sumatra in the past. As the main gateway to the interior, this place became a center for the trade of pepper and forest products. It was here that merchants from abroad—from Arabia, India, to China—conducted diplomatic processes and paid taxes before being allowed to trade further upstream.

One of the most crucial historical events was the function of this hall as the place where the oath of office was taken by the royal dignitaries (Orang Besar Berempat) who assisted the Sultan in governing. Furthermore, this site witnessed the tensions between the Asahan Sultanate and the Dutch colonial power in the 19th century, where the port in front of the Balai became the main defense point before the Dutch finally established their influence through political treaties.

Important Figures and Connections to Eras

Besides Sultan Abdul Jalil, an important figure closely associated with this site is Sultan Saibun (the last Sultan of Asahan before independence). Although the center of power later moved to the Indra Sakti Palace, the sacred value of Balai Di Ujung Tanjung remained preserved as a place of reverence for ancestors.

The existence of this Balai is also closely related to the spread of Islam in the Asahan region. Scholars from Aceh often stopped by and gave sermons at this hall upon the Sultan's invitation, making this place a center for early Islamic propagation on the Asahan coast before the construction of the larger Jami' Mosque.

Preservation Status and Restoration Efforts

Currently, the condition of Balai Di Ujung Tanjung has undergone various changes due to renovations and the demands of the times. Although the original wooden building has weathered and much of it has been replaced with permanent materials (concrete) to maintain its durability, the historical value of its location is preserved.

The Tanjungbalai City Government has designated this area as a Cultural Heritage Site. Restoration efforts are being made by rebuilding a replica of the hall resembling its original form for educational and historical tourism purposes. However, the biggest challenges in preserving this site are river abrasion and the density of residential settlements around it, which obscure the original landscape of the "tanjung."

Cultural and Religious Significance

For the people of Tanjungbalai, Balai Di Ujung Tanjung is not just a tourist attraction, but a symbol of the "Melayu Asahan" identity. To this day, this location is often used for traditional ceremonies, such as the "Tepung Tawar" procession for honored guests or the commemoration of Tanjungbalai City's anniversary.

Religiously, the proximity of this site to the sacred tombs of Asahan nobles makes it a place frequently visited by pilgrims. The local community believes that preserving Balai Di Ujung Tanjung is a form of respect for the dignity of the city's founders who laid the foundations of civilization on the banks of the Silau River.

Unique Historical Facts

One unique fact that is rarely known is that the location of Balai Di Ujung Tanjung is strategically situated precisely at the confluence of river waters of different colors. The Silau River, which often carries mud sediment, meets the clearer Asahan River at this point. This natural phenomenon was once considered by the kingdom's founders as a sign of "fertility and prosperity," hence this point was chosen as the first center of government.

Furthermore, according to local lore, beneath the riverbed directly in front of this hall, there lies a sunken ancient cannon from a battle with foreign ships, which remains a mystery to underwater archaeology researchers to this day.

With all the narratives that accompany it, Balai Di Ujung Tanjung stands as a living monument. It reminds the modern generations of Tanjungbalai that the progress of this port city began with a simple hall on a cape, a place where diplomacy, trade, and spirituality merged in the never-ending flow of the river.
