Mount Rinjani Hiking Itinerary: 2-3 Day Trek Guide

Overview

Mount Rinjani is Indonesia's second highest volcano at 3,726 metres. The mountain sits on Lombok island, east of Bali, and draws trekkers who want a real challenge. You will climb through grassland, volcanic scree, and tropical forest to reach a crater lake and, if you choose, the summit.

The trek takes 2 to 4 days. Most people do either 2 or 3 days. This guide covers both options so you can pick what suits your fitness and schedule.

Routes and Starting Points

Two main gateways exist. Most routes start at one and end at the other.

Sembalun (eastern gateway, 1,150m) is where summit routes begin. The trail climbs through open savanna and grassland before hitting volcanic scree. It is steeper but more direct. If you want to reach the true summit, you start here.

Senaru (northern gateway, 600m) starts in dense tropical forest and reaches the crater rim at 2,641 metres. This route focuses on the lake and hot springs rather than the summit.

Most trekkers begin in Sembalun and finish in Senaru. This gives you the summit experience plus a crater lake visit on the way down.

2-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Sembalun to Crater Rim

Start early from Sembalun gate. The first section rolls through grassland with views across the valley. Locals sometimes ride motorbikes on these lower trails, which can kick up dust.

The climb gets steeper as you approach the crater rim. You gain roughly 1,500 metres over 6 to 8 hours. Your guide team sets up camp at the rim for the night.

Sleep at around 2,641 metres. The temperature drops fast after sunset. Bring warm layers.

Day 2: Summit Push and Descent

Wake at 2am for the summit attempt. The push takes 3 to 4 hours up loose volcanic scree. The final stretch is steep. You reach 3,726 metres in time for sunrise.

After sunrise, descend to camp for breakfast. Then pack up and hike down to Senaru. The descent takes 5 to 7 hours through tropical forest.

A 2-day trek is demanding. You need solid fitness and determination. The summit push alone tests most people.

3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Sembalun to Crater Rim

Same as the 2-day itinerary. Hike from Sembalun to the crater rim. Camp overnight at 2,641 metres.

Day 2: Summit, Lake, and Hot Springs

Wake at 2am for the summit push. Reach the top for sunrise. Return to camp for breakfast.

Instead of descending immediately, hike down to Segara Anak crater lake at 2,000 metres. The lake sits inside the caldera and holds spiritual significance for local Sasak people.

Near the lake you will find natural hot springs. Many trekkers soak tired muscles here. Camp overnight by the lake.

Day 3: Descent to Senaru

Hike from the lake up to the Senaru crater rim, then descend through tropical forest to Senaru village. This takes 5 to 7 hours depending on pace.

A 3-day trek gives you time to enjoy the lake and hot springs. It also spreads the physical effort more evenly. Most trekkers prefer this option.

Best Time to Go

The dry season runs from April to November. July and August offer the driest conditions and clearest skies. These months are also the busiest.

April, May, and October give you a good balance. Fewer crowds and reasonable weather. June and September sit somewhere in the middle.

The wet season from December to March brings heavy rain, slippery trails, and poor visibility. Trekking is possible but harder and less predictable. Stick to the dry season if you can.

What to Pack

Your guide team provides tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, meals, and cooking gear. You carry personal items in a daypack. Porters handle the heavy stuff.

Essential items:

  • Hiking boots with ankle support
  • Warm layers for the summit, it can drop below freezing
  • Headlamp for the 2am start
  • Rain jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Personal snacks
  • Basic toiletries
  • Camera or phone for photos

You can rent boots, jackets, and gloves in Sembalun if you travel light.

Fitness Requirements

Rinjani is not a casual walk. The summit push involves steep volcanic scree, loose gravel, and thin air. Expect 8 to 10 hours of walking per day on summit routes.

You do not need to be an elite athlete. But you should manage several hours of uphill walking without stopping. Regular cardio training for 4 to 6 weeks before your trek helps a lot. Running, cycling, and stair climbing all work well.

Crater rim routes without the summit are moderate. Anyone with reasonable fitness who hikes occasionally can manage them.

Costs and Booking

Trek packages range from $165 to $195 per person. This covers:

  • Pickup and drop-off transport
  • Pre-trek hotel accommodation
  • Licensed guides and porters
  • All meals and snacks
  • Camping equipment
  • National park entry fees and permits

Not included: personal gear, travel insurance, tips for guides and porters, and any gear rental.

Group discounts exist. The more people in your group, the lower the per-person cost.

Since April 2026, all trekkers must have valid travel insurance. Make sure your policy covers helicopter evacuation. This can cost $5,000 to $15,000 if needed.

How to Get There

Most trekkers arrive from Bali, Lombok Airport, or the Gili Islands.

From Bali: Take a fast boat to Bangsal Harbour, which takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Or fly to Lombok International Airport in 25 minutes. Both connect to the pickup service.

From Gili Islands: Public boat to Bangsal Harbour takes 15 to 30 minutes. Pickup from Bangsal is included in packages.

From Lombok Airport: Pickup included. The drive to Sembalun takes roughly 2.5 hours through rice terraces and mountain roads.

Altitude and Health

The summit reaches 3,726 metres. Mild altitude symptoms like headache, shortness of breath, and light nausea are common above 3,000 metres. These usually pass quickly.

Serious altitude sickness is rare because you do not sleep at extreme altitude. You ascend and descend within the same day. Still, drink plenty of water, eat well, and tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.

Guides carry basic first aid and monitor trekkers throughout the climb.

Respect the Mountain

Rinjani has faced problems with trash and overcrowding. Choose a responsible operator that follows Leave No Trace principles. Pack out what you pack in.

The mountain is sacred to local Sasak people. Segara Anak lake holds spiritual significance. Treat the area with respect.
