About

Stunning Natural Architecture

Unlike typical waterfalls with a single stream, Sekumpul is a cluster of at least seven waterfalls spread across a green valley. The most iconic natural feature is the two main waterfalls that cascade side-by-side from a height of approximately 80 meters.

These two streams have different characteristics as they originate from different spring sources. The first stream comes from clear and cold mountain springs, while the second stream originates from a surface river whose volume increases drastically during the rainy season. The confluence of several water streams at the bottom of the valley creates natural pools surrounded by vertical cliff walls covered in moss and ancient ferns, creating an atmosphere akin to a prehistoric adventure film setting.

Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem and Biodiversity

The Sekumpul Waterfall area is located within the highland tropical rainforest zone of Buleleng. The high humidity around the valley supports a very rich ecosystem. Visitors can find various endemic flora, from large trees like teak and mahogany to various types of forest orchids clinging to tall tree trunks.

In terms of fauna, this area is home to various types of tropical birds. If you are lucky, you might hear the call of the Indonesian honeyeater or see eagles circling above the valley. The presence of brightly colored butterflies and rare dragonflies along the river is an indicator that the water and air quality in Sekumpul are still very pure and pollution-free.

Outdoor Activities and Adventure Experience

Visiting Sekumpul Waterfall is not just a leisurely tour, but a challenging physical adventure. Here are some of the main experiences offered:

1. Challenging Trekking: To reach the base of the waterfall, visitors must descend hundreds of quite steep stairs and cross dirt paths. This journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes, passing through local coffee and clove plantations whose aromas fill the air.

2. Nature Photography: With a backdrop of giant cliffs and water mist that creates rainbows when hit by sunlight, this place is a paradise for landscape photographers.

3. Swimming in Natural Pools: At the base of the waterfall, there are natural pools with very refreshing water. The sensation of the wind carrying water droplets from a height of 80 meters provides a natural relaxation effect for the body.

4. Local Cultural Exploration: The journey to the trekking starting point allows tourists to interact with local farmers and witness the traditional processing of cloves or Balinese coffee.

Best Time to Visit and Seasonal Variations

The choice of visiting time greatly determines your experience at Sekumpul. The best time to visit is during the dry season (April to October). During this period, the water flow remains stable, and the water is very clear (especially from the mountain springs). Sunlight penetrating the valley gaps in the morning around 09:00 to 11:00 creates the best lighting for documentation.

During the rainy season, the water flow will increase sharply, creating a very powerful spectacle. However, it should be noted that the trekking path becomes more slippery, and the river water often turns brown due to sediment from upstream. Visitor safety is a priority, so during heavy rain, access to the valley floor is sometimes restricted.

Conservation and Environmental Protection

The community of Sekumpul Village has a high awareness of preserving this natural heritage through local wisdom. The area is managed with community-based ecotourism principles. Littering is strictly prohibited, and the construction of permanent facilities around the waterfall area is highly restricted to maintain natural aesthetics.

Conservation efforts also focus on protecting the upstream river basin to ensure a continuous water supply throughout the year. Tourists are strongly advised not to use chemical products like soap or shampoo when bathing in the natural pools to maintain water quality for the ecosystem downstream.

Accessibility and Supporting Facilities

Geographically, Sekumpul Waterfall is about 75 kilometers from the tourist center of Kuta, or about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. The road leading there is very winding, passing through the cool Bedugul mountains, offering views of Lake Buyan and Tamblingan along the way.

The facilities available in this tourist area are quite adequate, including:

  • Parking Area: Available at the village entrance.
  • Local Guide: It is highly recommended to use the services of a local guide for safety and to gain in-depth information about the trekking routes.
  • Traditional Warungs: There are several small stalls owned by locals selling cold drinks, young coconuts, and snacks along the trekking path.
  • Toilets and Changing Rooms: Available at several points before reaching the main waterfall area.

Sekumpul Waterfall is not just a photo destination, but a journey to appreciate Bali's pristine natural grandeur. For those willing to undertake the long journey and physical trekking, Sekumpul will pay off handsomely with unforgettable beauty, making it the pinnacle of nature tourism experiences in North Bali.
