The History of Cianjur Regency: From Ground Zero to the City of Santri

Origins and Founding (17th Century)

The history of Cianjur began with the expansion of the Pajajaran Kingdom's territory. Officially, Cianjur's anniversary is set on July 12, 1677. The central figure in the formation of this region was Raden Aria Wiratanu I, known as Eyang Dalem Cikundul. He was the son of Raden Aria Wangsa Goparana, a descendant of King Munding Sari of Pajajaran who spread Islam in the Talaga region.

The name "Cianjur" comes from the words "Ci" (water) and "Anjur" (suggestion or guidance). Wiratanu I established a settlement strategically on the banks of the Cianjur River as the center of government. During this period, Cianjur emerged as an independent local power amidst the competition between the Mataram Sultanate and the VOC's influence in Batavia.

Dutch Colonial Era and the World's Coffee Center

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Cianjur played a vital role in the colonial economy through the Preangerstelsel (Priangan System) policy. The fertility of its land made Cianjur the first and largest coffee plantation center in Java. Coffee from this region was known as "Java Coffee" and was very popular in Europe.

Due to its strategic position on the Grote Postweg (Great Post Road) built by Daendels in 1808, Cianjur briefly served as the capital of the Priangan Residency until 1864, before eventually being moved to Bandung for security reasons after the eruption of Mount Gede and the development of the railway line. Traces of this colonial era are still visible in the architecture of old buildings around the Alun-Alun and Pendopo Cianjur.

Struggle for Independence and the Bojongkokosan Incident

Entering the independence era, the people of Cianjur were actively involved in the resistance against Dutch military aggression. One of the heroic events that made history was the Battle of Bojongkokosan (although administratively it now belongs to Sukabumi, historically it involved fighters from the Cianjur regiment). In the city center, the Jago Monument stands as a symbol of the courage of the Cianjur people against the invaders. Local figures like KH Abdullah Bin Nuh made significant contributions through religious thought and santri movements in defending Indonesia's sovereignty.

Cultural Heritage and the "Three Pillars" Identity

Cianjur possesses a specific cultural richness, summarized in the philosophy of "Maos, Mamaos, and Mainpo." Maos refers to the tradition of reading the Quran (religiosity), Mamaos is the Cianjuran Sundanese song art created by Regent R.A.A. Kusumaningrat (Dalem Pancaniti), and Mainpo is the legendary Cikalong school of pencak silat martial arts. Furthermore, the Gunung Padang megalithic site located in Karyamukti is evidence that Cianjur was home to the oldest civilization in the Nusantara, long before the formal kingdom era began.

Modern Development

Today, with an area of 3,646.19 km², Cianjur has developed into a modern agricultural region while still maintaining its identity as the "City of Santri." Although geographically located in the middle of West Java and not having a direct coastline in its main administrative center (despite having a southern region facing the Indian Ocean), Cianjur remains an important node connecting Jakarta, Bogor, and Bandung. Its long history from the megalithic to the colonial era makes Cianjur an important pillar in the mosaic of West Java's history.
