About

Evolution and Development History

The history of Lapasi Beach is inseparable from the initiatives of the local community of Laba Village. In the past, this area was just an ordinary coast used by fishermen to dock their boats. However, the collective awareness of the residents about the potential of its fine white sand and dramatic sunset views sparked a self-help development movement.

The peak of Lapasi Beach's development occurred when it was chosen as one of the main locations for the Jailolo Bay Festival (FTJ), an international-level tourism event. This transformation brought significant changes to the infrastructure, with the local government beginning to build adequate access roads, performance stages, and other supporting facilities without losing the natural characteristics of the Sahu countryside.

Recreational Activities and Unique Experiences

Lapasi Beach is not just a place to sit idly and enjoy the scenery. The management has designed various activities that utilize the beach's gentle topography:

1. Boat and Canoe Tours: Visitors can rent traditional boats or canoes to explore the coastline. The clarity of the water around Lapasi allows tourists to see the shallow seabed from the boat.

2. Enjoying the "Golden" Sunset: One of Lapasi's main selling points is its geographical position facing directly west. The sunset phenomenon here is known to be very dramatic, with the sky turning into gradients of orange and purple that reflect on the wet white sand.

3. Beach Sports: The wide coastline and dense sand texture make it an ideal location for playing beach volleyball or plastic football with the local residents.

Facilities and Visitor Comfort

To support comfort, Lapasi Beach has been equipped with various modern yet traditional-themed facilities:

  • Coastal Gazebos (Cottages): Lined along the beach, wooden gazebos with thatched roofs are available for families who want to relax. Their location under the shade of coconut trees provides natural coolness even during the hot midday sun.
  • Cultural Stage: There is an open area often used for traditional music and dance performances from North Maluku.
  • Local Culinary Delights: A row of food stalls offers West Halmahera specialties, such as Grilled Fish with Dabu-dabu Lemari, Pisang Goreng Mulut Bebek (Duck-mouth Fried Bananas), and warm Air Guraka with ginger and kenari nut.
  • Parking and Sanitation Area: A spacious parking lot and clean toilet and shower facilities are available, making it convenient for visitors after swimming in the sea.

Family-Friendly Destination and Child-Friendly Attractions

Lapasi Beach is ideal as a family destination. The relatively calm waves, protected by the bay, make swimming activities safe for children under parental supervision. Additionally, there is a simple playground and a vast expanse of sand often used by children to build sandcastles.

Educational value is also present through interaction with the fishing community. Children can directly observe how traditional fishermen manage their seafood catches, providing insight into the authentic marine life of North Maluku.

Cultural Significance and Community Role

Lapasi Beach is the social heart for the people of Sahu. Its existence is not merely a place for profit, but a symbol of Community-Based Tourism sovereignty. The management of the beach involves local youth through the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis).

Culturally, Lapasi often serves as a venue for traditional rituals or celebrations. The harmony between nature and tradition is clearly visible during major events, where the community wears traditional attire and performs traditional dances on the beach, creating a spectacle that unites human and universal elements.

Visitor Information and Best Time to Visit

To reach Lapasi Beach, visitors can take a land journey of approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour from the center of Jailolo, the capital of West Halmahera. The road access is well-paved, winding through green hills and lush coconut plantations.

Best Time to Visit:

  • Late Afternoon (16:00 - 18:30 WIT): This is the most popular time as the weather starts to cool down and visitors can prepare to welcome the sunset.
  • Weekends: If you enjoy a lively atmosphere and social interaction.
  • During the Jailolo Bay Festival: Usually held between May or June. During this period, Lapasi Beach will be very festive with various competitions, UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) exhibitions, and a large entertainment stage.

Additional Tips for Tourists

For those planning to visit Lapasi Beach, it is advisable to bring a change of clothes if you wish to try water activities. Although food stalls are available, bringing your own water bottle is highly recommended to reduce plastic waste in the beach area. Don't forget to always maintain cleanliness by disposing of trash in the provided bins, to preserve the beauty of the white sand that is the pride of the people of West Halmahera.

With all its natural charm, friendly locals, and continuously improving facilities, Lapasi Beach stands tall as a must-visit destination for anyone setting foot in North Maluku. It is the perfect embodiment of recreation that combines peace of mind with the joy of physical activity in the great outdoors.
