Exploring the Wonders of Akesahu Hot Springs: A Gem of West Halmahera's Coastline

West Halmahera, one of the regencies in North Maluku, holds extraordinary geological and natural wealth. Amidst its clusters of volcanoes and dramatic coastlines, lies a destination that offers a unique harmony between geothermal heat and the freshness of the sea: Akesahu Hot Springs. Located in Akesahu Village, Jailolo District, this destination is not just an ordinary hot spring pool, but a natural phenomenon showcasing the marvels of volcanic elements interacting with the coastal ecosystem.

Geological Uniqueness: Freshwater on the Salty Sea's Edge

One of Akesahu's most specific attractions, setting it apart from other hot springs in Indonesia, is its location. While hot springs are usually found in highlands or at the foot of mountains, Akesahu is situated right on the beach. This phenomenon is highly unique because, despite being very close to the salty sea, the hot water emerging from the rock crevices in Akesahu is clear, freshwater.

Geologically, this is related to the active volcanic activity of Mount Jailolo. Geothermal heat from the earth's core heats groundwater flows, which then emerge to the surface through andesite rock fissures on the coast. Visitors can experience a rare sensation: soaking in warm, freshwater while gazing at the vast expanse of the Maluku Sea with its calm waves.

Captivating Natural Landscape and Biodiversity

Akesahu Hot Springs is surrounded by a feast for the eyes. On one side, visitors are treated to the view of the blue waters of Jailolo Bay, with its turquoise gradients at the edges. On the other, rows of coconut trees and lush tropical vegetation provide natural shade, creating a cool microclimate despite the relatively high temperature of the spring water.

The ecosystem around Akesahu is also home to various endemic bird species of Maluku. If lucky, in the morning, visitors can hear the chirping of parrots and see sea eagles gliding low over the water's surface in search of fish. The coral rocks around the hot spring area also support a healthy coastal ecosystem, where various types of beach crabs and small marine life take shelter in the rock crevices.

Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities

Akesahu offers a comprehensive relaxation experience. The main activity, of course, is soaking in the natural pools. The water temperature, ranging between 38 to 42 degrees Celsius, is believed by the local community to have healing properties, from relaxing stiff muscles, improving blood circulation, to helping overcome various skin diseases due to its natural yet non-irritating sulfur mineral content.

Besides soaking, visitors can engage in other activities such as:

1. Beach Combing: Exploring Akesahu's rocky and sandy coastline to find unique shells or simply enjoy the sea breeze.

2. Nature Photography: The unique blend of hot spring pools, shady trees, and the sea backdrop makes Akesahu a very instagrammable location, especially during sunset.

3. Family Picnics: Under the shade of large, old banyan trees around the site, many families spread out mats to enjoy local delicacies like Pisang Mulu Bebe and Sambal Roa while savoring the beach atmosphere.

Facilities and Accessibility

The West Halmahera Regency government has undertaken development in the Akesahu area to enhance tourist comfort without damaging its natural authenticity. Available facilities include:

  • Hot Spring Pools: Several hot water reservoirs are surrounded by natural stone walls to keep the water clean and maintain the temperature.
  • Changing Rooms and Toilets: Adequate sanitation facilities are available near the main area.
  • Gazebos: Several gazebos or shelters have been built for visitors to rest.
  • Road Access: The road to Akesahu is well-paved. From the center of Jailolo town, the journey takes only about 15 to 20 minutes by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicle. The journey itself is a scenic bonus, passing through a coastal route with beautiful mountain and sea views.

Best Time to Visit

To get the maximum experience, the best times to visit Akesahu are in the morning (06:00 - 09:00) or in the afternoon (after 16:00). In the morning, the air is still very fresh, and the hot water temperature provides a strong contrast with the morning air, offering maximum therapeutic effects. In the afternoon, visitors can enjoy a stunning sunset over the Jailolo Bay horizon after their soak.

Seasonally, the best time to visit is during the dry season (April to October). During this period, the sky tends to be clear, and the sea in front of Akesahu is calmer, resulting in much clearer visibility of the surrounding scenery.

Conservation and Environmental Protection Efforts

As a nature-based destination sensitive to environmental changes, the preservation of Akesahu is a priority. The community of Akesahu Village has protected this sacred area for generations, which indirectly aids conservation. Visitors are strictly prohibited from throwing trash into the pools or the sea, and are forbidden from using soap or chemical shampoos directly in the hot spring pools to maintain the purity of the minerals and the groundwater ecosystem.

The local government also continues to promote the concept of ecotourism, where supporting facility development must use environmentally friendly materials and not alter the natural structure of the rocks from which the hot water emerges.

Conclusion

Akesahu Hot Springs is a tangible testament to the geodiversity wealth of North Maluku. Its existence, which defies logic—hot freshwater on the edge of a salty sea—makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers seeking tranquility and natural wonders. With a blend of health therapy, coastal beauty, and the local hospitality of Jailolo, Akesahu is not just a tourist spot, but a space where humans can reconnect with the pure energy from the earth's core.
