Exploring the Wonders of Lehi Beach: Indonesia's Only Hot Spring Beach
The Siau Tagulandang Biaro Islands, more commonly known as Sitaro Regency in North Sulawesi, harbor a stunning natural anomaly on its northern coast. Lehi Beach, administratively located in West Siau District, is not just an ordinary beach with sand and waves. This destination holds the unique title of being the only hot spring beach in Indonesia, a volcanic phenomenon that directly meets the Pacific Ocean coastline.
Geological Characteristics and Natural Uniqueness
The main attraction of Lehi Beach lies in its seawater temperature. Unlike typical beaches that offer a cool and refreshing sensation, the seawater at the edge of Lehi Beach feels warm to hot. This phenomenon originates from the geothermal activity of Mount Karangetang, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes that dominates the landscape of Siau Island.
Geologically, hot springs emerge from cracks in the seabed rocks and along the coastline. This geothermal heat seeps out, warming the seawater around the rocky crevices. Uniquely, although this water mixes with salty seawater, the taste of the water at some seepage points is not overly salty, but rather brackish with a faint yet distinct sulfurous aroma.
The landscape of Lehi Beach is dominated by sturdy black rock cliffs and volcanic gravel. There are no vast stretches of white sand here; instead, visitors are treated to the dramatic aesthetics of igneous rocks, which are the result of lava encapsulation over thousands of years. The seawater is crystal clear, with color gradations from turquoise green at the edges to deep blue in the deeper parts.
Adaptive Ecosystem and Biodiversity
The warm water conditions create a very specific ecosystem. Not all marine life can survive in the high-temperature waters of Lehi Beach. However, this has led to a unique biodiversity. In the crevices of coral rocks fed by warm water, there are types of algae and microorganisms that have specifically adapted to extreme temperatures.
Around the beach area, typical tropical rainforest vegetation of volcanic islands thrives. Coconut trees and other green foliage cling to the steep cliffs, providing a fresh green contrast to the blue sea and black volcanic rocks. Endemic Sulawesi birds are sometimes seen flying among the cliffs, adding to the richness of fauna in this still very pristine area.
Outdoor Activities and Tourist Experience
Visiting Lehi Beach offers a sensory experience not found elsewhere. The main activity that must be tried is soaking in the natural pools along the beach. Local residents and tourists often build small dikes from arranged stones to trap warm water during low tide, creating natural "bathtubs" with a direct view of the open sea.
Soaking in the hot waters of Lehi Beach is believed to have health benefits, especially for treating skin diseases and relaxing tense muscles, thanks to the sulfur content derived from volcanic activity. For those who enjoy a challenge, climbing the rock cliffs around the beach offers an extraordinary photographic viewpoint, showcasing Siau's winding coastline.
Besides soaking, visitors can enjoy fishing with local fishermen or simply sit on large rocks while waiting for the sunset. Due to its northwest-facing location, Lehi Beach is one of the best spots on Siau Island to enjoy a dramatic sunset panorama, where the sun seems to sink into the sea, emitting warm steam.
Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Lehi Beach is during the dry season, between May and September. During this period, the sea waves tend to be calmer, so the warm water at the edge of the beach is not too distorted by the large waves from the deep sea.
It is highly recommended to arrive at the location in the morning or late afternoon before sunset. During the day, the air temperature and water temperature can be very scorching. Soaking in the late afternoon when the air begins to cool provides a perfect relaxing sensation.
Conservation and Environmental Protection
As a destination that is highly dependent on geological activity, the preservation of Lehi Beach is well-maintained by the local community. Lehi Beach is currently designated as a natural tourist area managed with minimal intervention to preserve its authenticity. Tourists are strictly prohibited from discarding plastic waste into rock crevices or the sea, as it can damage the micro-ecosystem present in the warm waters.
The local government, along with the indigenous people of Siau, continuously strives to monitor the volcanic activity of Mount Karangetang, as tourist safety is the top priority. Protection of the volcanic rock structures is also carried out by prohibiting the removal of beach rocks for commercial purposes.
Accessibility and Facilities
Reaching Lehi Beach requires a rather long journey but is very worthwhile. From Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, visitors must take a fast ferry from Manado Port to Ulu Siau Port, with a travel time of approximately 4 hours. From Ulu Port, Lehi Beach can be reached by motorized vehicle in about 20 to 30 minutes, following winding asphalt roads with mountain and sea views.
Facilities around Lehi Beach have begun to be developed but still maintain a traditional feel. There are several gazebos or "sabua" for resting, simple changing rooms, and small stalls managed by local residents serving Siau's signature cuisine like sweet nutmeg or fresh grilled fish. For accommodation, tourists usually stay in guesthouses or hotels located in the center of Ulu Siau town due to its close proximity.
Lehi Beach is more than just a tourist destination; it is a testament to Indonesia's geological wonders. The warmth of its waters is a warm greeting from the earth's core of Sulawesi, ready to welcome anyone seeking tranquility and uniqueness at the northern tip of the archipelago.
