History and Narrative of Padang Pariaman Civilization

Padang Pariaman, a coastal region of 1,310.51 km² in the western coast of West Sumatra, plays a crucial role in the timeline of the Nusantara's history. As one of the strategic "Rantau Pariaman" areas, this region is not merely a geographical point, but the main gateway for the entry of Islamic civilization and global influences in Ranah Minang.

##

Prehistoric Roots and Sultanate Era

Padang Pariaman's history is inseparable from its legendary port. Since the 14th century, this region has been a meeting point for pepper trade. Its historical uniqueness lies in the spread of Islam pioneered by Syekh Burhanuddin Ulakan. He founded Surau Gadang in Ulakan around 1680, which later became the oldest Islamic educational center in Minangkabau. The tradition of Basapa (pilgrimage to Syekh Burhanuddin's tomb), performed every Safar month, is still preserved today as a monumental religious-cultural heritage.

##

Colonial Era and People's Resistance

In the 17th century, the allure of pepper brought the VOC (Dutch) to establish its power through the Painan Treaty in 1663. A Dutch trading post was established in Pariaman to monopolize the commodity. However, the people of Padang Pariaman are known for their high resistance. During the Padri War (1821-1837), this region became a conflict zone between adat (customary law) groups, religious groups, and Dutch intervention. Tactical uniqueness was evident in the local community's defense in natural fortresses along the west coast.

##

Role in Independence and Military Aggression

Entering the 20th century, Padang Pariaman became a base for the national movement. Educated figures from this region made significant contributions to Indonesia's independence. During the Second Dutch Military Aggression (1948-1949), this region witnessed the resilience of the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI). One of the crucial events was the battle in Sintuk and Lubuk Alung, where local fighters worked together to repel Dutch convoys attempting to control the logistics route to Bukittinggi.

##

Modern Transformation and Regional Connectivity

After independence, Padang Pariaman transformed into the main buffer for West Sumatra Province. With its astronomical location bordering six administrative regions (Agam Regency, Tanah Datar Regency, Solok Regency, Padang City, Pariaman City, and Mentawai Islands via sea route), this region became a connectivity hub. Modern monumentality is marked by the construction of Minangkabau International Airport (BIM) in Ketaping in 2005, whose architecture retains the identity of the Bagonjong roof.

##

Cultural Heritage and Local Identity

Culturally, Padang Pariaman is synonymous with the Tabuik art and the Maanta Nasi tradition. Its maritime culture shapes a community character that is open yet firm in the principle of "Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah" (Custom is based on religion, religion is based on the Book of Allah). The existence of historical sites such as the Grand Mosque of Syekh Burhanuddin and remnants of colonial railway tracks in Lubuk Alung are physical evidence of a long journey from the pepper trade era to the digital age. Today, with its significant area, Padang Pariaman continues to develop as an educational center (presence of Unand Campus and various state vocational schools) and a logistics hub connecting the heart of Sumatra with global markets.
