About

Historical Context and Development

The construction of Darussalam Grand Mosque was an ambitious project conceived to replace the old mosque whose capacity was no longer adequate. The construction process was carried out in stages, with major renovations beginning during the governorship of Agustin Teras Narang around 2011. The primary focus of this reconstruction was to create an Islamic propagation center capable of accommodating 10,000 to 20,000 worshippers, while also serving as an icon of the province's progress.

This development involved collaboration between the local government and architects who understood Kalimantan's geographical characteristics. Considering the peat-rich soil conditions in Palangka Raya, the mosque's substructure was built using deep pile foundation technology to ensure the long-term stability of this massive building.

Architectural Style: Modernism Wrapped in Traditionalism

Broadly speaking, Darussalam Grand Mosque adopts a Modern-Contemporary architectural style. This is evident in the use of sharp lines, clean geometric shapes, and modern materials such as aluminum composite panels (ACP). However, its unique charm lies in the integration of traditional motifs into the modern structure.

One of the most striking elements is the application of the Telabang Motif (a distinctive Dayak shield) and the Batang Garing (Tree of Life) carvings, reinterpreted as ornaments on the mosque's facade and walls. This fusion creates a dialogue between universal Islamic values and the specific local wisdom of Kalimantan. The dominant green color of the dome is not only a symbol of peace in Islam but also represents the lush tropical rainforest that blankets the land of Tambun Bungai.

Iconic Dome and Minaret Structure

Darussalam Grand Mosque features a very large main dome with an impressive diameter. This dome is surrounded by smaller domes, creating a dynamic visual rhythm. The use of geometric patterns on the dome's surface creates an ever-changing visual effect depending on the angle of sunlight.

Externally, a single, towering minaret reaches approximately 114 meters—a symbolic number referring to the number of surahs in the Al-Qur'an. This minaret not only serves as a loudspeaker for the call to prayer but also as a visual orientation point for city residents. From the top of the minaret, a clear view of the green landscape of Palangka Raya city is visible.

Structural Innovations and Interior Details

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a spacious main hall with minimal central supporting pillars. This was made possible through the use of wide-span technology in the roof structure. The mosque's ceiling is adorned with meticulously crafted Arabic calligraphy, combined with indirect lighting that creates a warm and serene ambiance.

The mosque's floor is made of high-quality marble, which keeps the room cool despite Palangka Raya's hot tropical weather. The details of the mihrab (the niche where the imam leads prayer) are designed artistically with touches of gold that contrast with the background walls, creating a strong focal point for worshippers.

The mosque's ventilation system is also intelligently designed. Although equipped with air conditioning, the large windows and openings allow for good natural air circulation, reducing reliance on electricity and maximizing natural light during the day.

Cultural and Social Significance

Darussalam Grand Mosque stands on approximately 5 hectares of land that also includes the Islamic Center area. Its existence holds great social significance as a symbol of religious harmony in Central Kalimantan. Although it is a center for Islamic activities, its architecture, which embraces local Dayak motifs, demonstrates that Islam in Central Kalimantan coexists harmoniously with local customs.

For the people of Palangka Raya, this mosque is a social gravity center. Besides being a place for the five daily prayers and Friday prayers, the area serves as an educational hub through surrounding educational institutions and a center for economic empowerment of the community. The spacious mosque courtyard is often used for major religious events such as provincial and national MTQ (Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an).

Visitor Experience and Religious Tourism

For tourists, visiting Darussalam Grand Mosque offers a stunning visual experience. At night, the mosque's lighting system is designed to highlight its architectural details, making the building appear to "glow" in the darkness of the city. The large plaza area in front is often used by residents to relax while enjoying the beauty of the building.

The mosque's accessibility is also excellent, with ample parking space and supporting facilities such as clean ablution areas that are also disability-friendly. Every element, from the well-maintained gardens to the cleanliness of the interior areas, is designed to provide maximum comfort for anyone who visits, whether for worship or simply to admire its magnificent architecture.

Conclusion: A Legacy for the Future

Darussalam Grand Mosque of Palangka Raya is proof of how architecture can be a bridge between tradition and modernity. It is not merely a pile of bricks and mortar, but a manifestation of the pride of the people of Central Kalimantan. By uniting religious symbolism and local identity, this mosque will continue to stand as a beacon of spirituality and a timeless architectural icon in the heart of Kalimantan Island.
