About
Topography and Unique Rock Formations
Doyam Turu Waterfall is not just a cascade of water from a height, but a geological masterpiece. Situated in a hilly area that is part of a protected forest ecosystem, this waterfall has a stepped characteristic. These tiers are formed from sedimentary and andesite rock formations that have been eroded over thousands of years, creating natural pools at each level.
The total height of this waterfall is quite impressive, with a stable water flow even during the dry season. The water descends over moss-covered stone cliffs, giving a magical and ancient impression. Its main uniqueness lies in the "seven-tiered" structure; each tier has a different depth and current, allowing visitors to choose the spot that best suits their desires, from calm areas for soaking to strong currents for experiencing a natural massage from the falling water.
Biodiversity and Rainforest Ecosystem
Being in the Doyam Turu Waterfall area means entering a rich natural laboratory. The surrounding vegetation is dominated by large Kalimantan trees such as Meranti and Ulin, which tower high, creating a natural canopy that protects the area from direct sunlight. The high humidity around the waterfall supports the growth of various types of epiphytes, wild orchids, and giant ferns.
In terms of fauna, this area is still home to various endemic birds of Kalimantan. The chirping of Hornbills can occasionally be heard breaking the silence, harmonizing with the rhythmic sound of forest insects (cicadas). If lucky, visitors may see ground squirrels or various species of butterflies with exotic color patterns flying around the water flow. The existence of this well-preserved ecosystem makes Doyam Turu not just a recreational spot, but also a germplasm protection stronghold for the Regency of Paser.
Tourist Experience and Outdoor Activities
Doyam Turu offers a wide spectrum of activities for nature lovers. For those who enjoy physical challenges, trekking along each tier of the waterfall is a must. The climbing path on the side of the waterfall demands sufficient stamina, but the fatigue will be fully rewarded upon reaching the highest tier, which offers a panoramic view of the Paser forest landscape from above.
The main activity, of course, is swimming in the natural pools. The water at Doyam Turu is known to be very clear and cold, providing an instant relaxing effect for the body. Besides swimming, the gentle areas around the river flow below the waterfall are often used by visitors for camping. Spending the night under the shade of old trees with the roaring sound of the waterfall as a backdrop is an unforgettable experience. Nature photography also becomes a unique magnet; the interaction between sunlight filtering through the leaves (Tyndall effect) and the water vapor from the waterfall creates extraordinary visual compositions for photographers.
Accessibility and Supporting Facilities
Reaching Doyam Turu Waterfall requires a land journey from the center of Tana Paser town. The distance is approximately 25 to 30 kilometers, which can be covered in about an hour by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. The journey to Lempesu Village will present views of local plantations and secondary forests.
Facilities at this location are continuously being developed by the local government and community. Currently, a walking path has been provided to facilitate access to the main waterfall point. There are also several gazebos or resting huts strategically placed at spots with the best views. Basic facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, and parking areas are available, while still maintaining an environmentally friendly concept so as not to damage the natural aesthetics of the area. Local vendors around the parking area also offer local snacks and drinks for visitors who do not bring their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
To get the maximum experience, the best time to visit Doyam Turu Waterfall is at the end of the rainy season or the beginning of the dry season (around April to June). During this period, the water flow is abundant, so all tiers of the waterfall look majestic, yet the water remains clear and not murky due to the decreasing intensity of rainfall.
It is highly recommended to arrive at the location in the morning around 08:00 WITA. Besides the air being very fresh, the morning sunlight entering through the gaps in the cliffs creates a very dramatic atmosphere for documentation. Avoid visiting during heavy rain as the rocky paths can become very slippery and there is a risk of sudden water level increases.
Conservation and Environmental Sustainability
Given its status as part of an important forest ecosystem, the preservation of Doyam Turu Waterfall is a shared responsibility. The Regency Government of Paser, along with the community of Lempesu Village, actively campaigns for ecotourism. Visitors are strongly urged not to litter, especially plastic waste that can damage water quality and disturb local fauna.
Protection efforts also include prohibiting tree felling around the river basin (DAS) to prevent erosion and maintain the stability of the waterfall's water flow. Awareness to preserve the natural beauty of Doyam Turu is key for the "Seven Tiers" to be enjoyed by future generations. By visiting this destination, tourists indirectly contribute to the local economy that supports community-based conservation efforts.
Doyam Turu Waterfall is not just an ordinary tourist destination; it is the soul of Paser's nature. The combination of geological wonders, biodiversity, and tranquil atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to escape routine for a moment and reconnect with the authentic nature of Kalimantan.
